Registration for the Half Hollow Hills Universal Pre-K program is happening now.  Deadline is Feb. 13, 2009 for this upcoming fall.  This no-cost program is for 5 days a week, 2 and a half hours per day, either am or pm session.  Residents in the HHH school district with a child who will be 4 years old on or before Dec. 31,2009 are eligible.  If the number of applicants exceeds the allotted space, a lottery will be started.  The pre-k programs are held in designated elementary schools throughout the district. My daughter was in the 07-08 program and it was wonderful.  Her teachers, Miss Lori & Miss Vanessa, were amazing.  It really helped pave the way to full time kindergarten (especially since the program was in the same school).  Online applications available at www.hhh.k12.ny.us   Ca...

NO INTERMODAL!!! The State Senate and Assembly has passed the Anti-Intermodal bill.  This bill reinforces the law which requires the land owned by the Pilgrim State Hospital be transferred to the Edgewood Perserve.  The DOT had intended to use this land to build the Long Island Truck and Rail Intermodal Facility. Not only is this a great win for those opposing the Intermodal, it is one step closer to protecting the quality of life for the residents in the Brentwood, Edgewood, Dix Hills, Deer Park, Commack areas.  The air pollution and traffic congestion on Commack Road, just south of the Long Island Expressway has been a great concern.  We still have to continue fighting!  The legislation is now in the hands of Governor David Patterson.  We must express our concerns to the Governor's of...

The Town of Huntington's Movies On the Lawn Program is Back. This year kicks off at the Dix Hills Park (by the pool) on Monday, June 30th, featuring the BEE Movie.  I went to last years drive-in movie at Crab Meadow Beach with the kids.  We had a great time.  So bring the family, friends, and kids.  Don't forget your blanket, lawn chairs ,dinner/snacks (and some bug repellent).  This is a free event that begins at darkness.  Looking forward to seeing you there! *If it gets rained out, the movie showing will be held indoors at John Glenn High School at 7:30

The Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills and Melville is part of a Museum Pass Pilot Program.  This great program allows district residents with a library card to reserve passes to: American Museum of Natural History Long Island Children's Museum Old Westbury Gardens Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum There are different guidelines for each pass, some good for one family, some for 2 adults and up to 4 children.  These passes allow for free admission to the museums and discounts at the shops and exhibitions.  I've already used the pass for the Children's Museum in Garden City.  My kids loved it!  You do have to reserve the passes but I must say there's not much of a wait.  I don't think many people are aware of this great program so I figured I'd get the word out.  **Please re...

I just received a very disturbing automated message from my son's elementary school. He attends Otsego Elementary in Dix Hills NY. The school just built a brand new playground this school year. It's beautiful and all the kids loved it. The message was to notify us that this very playground was destroyed earlier today by a fire. At this time, the assistant principal didn't give too much details. I hope that if anyone knows or saw anything regarding this fire that they will come forward and speak with the school officials. To the Otsego families-we are such a strong and dedicated community,I'm sure we'll have a new playground up for the kids in no time.

Welcome to the NEW and IMPROVED Home Trends Market Report for homes in the Half Hollow Hills School District.  This will be a monthly feature going forward (formerly a quarterly feature).  The report will continue to provide statistical information, but you will now also be able to see exactly where each sold home is located, how much it was listed for, how much it sold for and how many days that it was on the market. Since this is a monthly report, there will be a smaller sampling of homes.  As such, there will be greater fluctuations in the averages then there was with the quarterly reports.  This report is designed to give factual information about what is happening locally.  If you are interested in finding out the market value for your particular home, you should consider having a...

Happy New Year's to All!  The holiday decorations were beautiful and festive and made great photo ops for December but now that the holidays have passed, please replace the picture of the gorgeous Christmas tree in the living room with the cathedral ceilings and the garland laced foyer.  Although the holidays have just passed, seeing those pics makes the listing seem old.  Let's replace those holiday home pics with fresh pictures.  They're just so last year.

To my fellow Activerainers, a true Feng Shui Test for you.  These are real pictures of a place requesting Feng Shui Help in Dix Hills, Long Island. I would love to hear some comments on what YOU would do to this space either in Feng Shui, Decorating or both. Here's the background and then some pictures:  This is a non-profit, high functioning adult residence home located in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York.  I was emailed several months ago for help but after completing the project last year I felt I couldn't take it on.  This place is unable to keep staff, I was told it was like a revolving door.  And the residents were in a bit of chaos.  People's morales were down, there is no money coming in to help and they were looking for some Feng Shui solutions.I suggested they contact the New Y...
