Dates for the Jewish holidays 2013 - the High Holidays   I thought it might be helpful to jot down the dates for the Jewish holidays for 2013.  As this is based on the Jewish lunar calendar, the dates vary every year, and this year, they are early, with all of them taking place in September.    Importantly, the holidays start on the eve of the evening before.  If you have friends, clients, colleagues who might be celebrating these holidays, it's best to avoid phone calls during these days, especially for the first two - Rosh Hashana (the New Year celebration) and Yom Kppur (day of atonement - the holiest day of the year).   Rosh Hashana Sept 5th-6th (starts eve of Sept 4th) - The Jewish New Year Yom Kippur Sept 14th (starts eve of Sept 13th) -Day of Atonement- many fast during this day ... 09/03/2013

Gray hardwood floor refinishing in Westchester County Yes, believe it or not, gray hardwood flooring is in style! Higher end homeowners in Westchester keep requesting gray hardwood floors. Yes, gray! It's and up and coming trend. Finding prefinished gray hardwood is easy, but how about if you already have oak hardwood floors in your Westchester home?     As background, it's easy to get the gray color in prefinished maple or birch floors. Because these woods are close pored, they absorb the stains differently and some of the darker brown stains turn gray on maple and birch (see picture to the right). These same stains will look brown on oak, but gray on maple. What is a screen and recoat? Screening and buffing are the same thing. They are synonyms for each other, and both mean that you “scuff up” or abrade the floor, and then you apply a coat of polyurethane for protection and sheen. Screening is often called buffing, since the screening is done with a buffer. Screening both smooths the floors a bit, and the abrasive action allows the polyurethane to adhere to the surface better. The screen and recoat process can restore the glow of the floors and give them a refreshed look.     Some customers call this a "light sanding," but technically, it's a screen and recoat since you are not sanding the wood, but rather are just sanding the top layer of polyurethane. My customer from last night was so sweet, and she is moving to my home town in Chappaqua.  As it turns out, she is also buying one of those Frank Lloyd Wright inspired homes as part of Usonia. Very cool.   She told me that her real estate agent recommended me. Yay. I love her agent and I did her mom's home. So my customer checked out my website. And, as luck would have it, she recognized me...because months ago she had done some research a year ago on oil vs water based polyurethane for a refinishing project she was leading at her office. Design tip for Sylish hardwood in Westchester - Diagonal Layout Installing hardwood on a diagonal can have a big impact on the room's look.   First, diagonal makes the space look larger.  That's because your eye follows the longest length of the room, and if you remember geometry, the hypotenuse is always the longest length of the triangle.     Second, a diagonal layout adds visual intrigue to the room - it just looks much more visually intriguing than the standard straight lay.       Third, usually, the diagonal draws you in from the entrance to the focal point of the room. I met a really sweet couple today.  They just closed on a new home in Chappaqua, my home town (they are moving from The City).  The new house is literally 2 minutes from my parent's house, so I was happy to tell them what a wonderful choice they made and how great the schools are (and their kids will be going to the best elementary school..IMO).  I told them about the pool clubs and the best pizza restaurant (and the one to avoid).   They are doing some renovations  - painting and floors, and I'm hoping that we get to refinish the hardwood floors.  As it turns out, I also know their real estate agent (and I met her thanks to Active Rain).  I will give her a call on Monday.   Anyway, they told me how my advice was very helpful and that believe it or not, the seller invited them over to w... 04/13/2013
