The last time we were able to see legislators in person was before Covid.  In fact, we, The Business Council, were the last group to visit the capitol in March 2020.  The next week it shut down.  It has now reopened. It is always great to see how your state government works (or doesn't work).   Today we went up on a bus meet with legislators.  Because our EVP was a state assembly representative we have access to the state assembly chamber which great to see.The state capitol building has some amazing architecture.  Here is the map room.Although the capitol resembles a giant French chateau, the three-acre, five-story granite building is actually a variety of styles including Romanesque and French Renaissance—the result of it taking 32 years (1867-1899) and five architects to complete.  It...

Yesterday was National Make a Friend Day.  Conincidentally, it was also our annual day to visit our legislators in Albany, NY.Each year the The Business Council of Westchester goes with its members to visit state representatives.  We see all of the people in the Westchester delegation, the budget director, and sometimes, the governer. We have a good friendly relationship even if we disagree on some things. We got to enter the NYS Assembly Chamber and the speaker welcomed The Business Council of Westchester by Name:They were debated some legislation as indicated by the boardThis can get tedious but I don't think this representative would like to have this picture sent to his constituents. If you are looking to make your Westchester NY or Fairfield CT business thrive please contact me. Grant...

Each year I join other members of the Business Council of Westchester in visiting our NYS legislators and bring our business agenda.  This creates multiple opportunties even if you are not a political or legislative junkie. This year is was rather quiet becuase the legislaters were in committe and in session to try to pass the New York Budget due April 1st.Aside from that, a trip to our state capitol is a educational event and you can see history in the hall. Here is the Inner stair case. Here is the Map RoomAnd the hall of Governers...  Every governer's picture is here except one.  This is a picture of Governer Grover Cleveland who became US President.New York has many famous and well know men who were governers include four US Presidents.  They are Martin Van Buren, Grover Cleveland, The...

Holidays can be streesful but not this one.... No need to bring a gift.... Just grab a pint, sit back with your best pal, enjoy some lively banter and raise your glass in cheers to this fantastic day:  National Beer Day!  National Beer Day gives us the opportunity to focus on some of the gems in New York's Capital Region where you can enjoy a brew (& usually some great food too!).  There are great spots in the "obvious" of areas -- Albany, Troy and Saratoga Springs.  But there are some great little places not so far off of the main drag that deserve attention too...  As a Scotia-Glenville girl, I was happy to see the Mohawk Tap Room on the Times Union's list of "15 Capital Region Tap Rooms You Can Visit".   I'd be remiss though without giving a shout out to my favorite place to enjoy a ...

If you like architecture, then you will have fun downtown Albany New York.  There is such a diversity in architectural styles. One building that I found rather interesting was located across the street from NY State Capitol building  on State Street. This is the Albany City Hall on Eagle Street.   The building is on the US Nation Register of Historic place.

Last Night, the SUNY Board of Trustees voted to create the State University of New York Institute of Nanoscale Science, Engineering & Technology (SUNY INSET).  It is being billed as a SUNY option to top caliber tech schools such as M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). INSET is formed by a merger of the College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CSNE - previously part of the University of Albany) and the SUNY Institute of Technology (Marcy Nanocenter site) in Utica-Rome, and will be headed by Alain E. Kaloyeros as CEO.  It is scheduled to debut in January of 2015. According to Assembly Higher Education Committiee Chairwoman Deborah Glick, "This new merger will allow SUNY INSET to market itself as a niche college that could attract tech students from far and wide". Kaloyeros ...

I am proud and honored to be your Homes for Heroes Affiliate here in the Capital District! Fortunately, my life is full of everyday heroes like you and they never cease to amaze me. I’ve seen how hard you work, how little you’re paid and how often you make sacrifices in your own lives to teach, serve and save others.   My husband Dennis is teacher and Football coach.  My brother, sister-in-law and most of our friends are also teachers.  The rest of our family and friends are police officers, firemen, and nurses.  But lately, the most amazing heroes in my life are my husband’s football players and my children’s friends that have chosen to serve our country by enlisting in the military.  Over the years they’ve been at our home, day in and day out.  We’ve fed them, guided them, watched them ...

Enhancing Education by Feng Shui Environmental Healer Laura Cerrano To many times I hear, "this is to hard, I cant do this, I give up." That is the easy route in life, by giving in and not trying you are not living and growing. You neglect your spirit and self from meeting your core being and full potential.  What a shame that is. Perhaps we need to add a new form of studies into our "formal" education system.  The way we all think and perceive this world is no doubt-ably changing.  This indeed can be a touchy subject and idea to present.  Many will say, you are mixing religion with education.  No, that is not the case, it would be teaching our youth how to be independent, how to be mindful of others, the land which they live on and gain different perspectives on how to deal with life's...

President Obama is still coming to the Capital District's Tech Valley area on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 - but due to logistical problems, he'll be at the Nanotech Campus at UAlbany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) in Albany, NY instead of the Global Foundries Chip plant in Malta, NY.  Expect road closures throughout the day in preparation for and during the visit.  Some roads closings that will most likely occur are: I-90 from Thruway Exit 24 to Exit 4 , Washington Avenue extension from the Exit 2 on-ramp to Crossgates Mall and Fuller Road from Great Dane Avenue to Railroad Avenue.

365 Things to Do in Worcester County- Celebrate New Year EVERYWHERE.  Well I want to wish everyone a happy new year.  Today is the first day of 2011.  I am not in my beloved Worcester County.  I am in Albany with my family.  But New Year can be celebrated all over the world, and is. I am staying at Crowne Plaza Hotel in the heart of the Business District in Albany.  The hotel is well appointed with features like indoor pool, excersise room and hot tub.  My reason for visiting is to be with the family.  The family's reason is because my husband has a Scrabble Tournament in the Hotel for 5 days.  Yes, 5 days of scrabble.  Last night, New Year's eve, he finished by 6:00 pm and we were able to go out together for dinner to Olive Garden and then watched a movie, Centurion ( I thought it was ...

Last time when I visited my family in Albany, NY, it was nice and warm. It was a perfect time for Aqua Duck tour. This time around it was  perfect, too. Washington Park has a beautiful Holiday Light Show every year.     Only a few of the shots could make it to this blog post from my awesome 3 pixel phone.     The drive through Washington Park took more than 15 minutes ....     While driving slowly, we had a chance to stop for a few seconds.     There were many of those "ooh aah"  and look at this moments :)     If you are from the area, there are a few days left. More information and virtual ride on Capital Holiday Lights web site. Happy New Year!
