Las Cruces, New Mexico is one of 151 cities in the US that has earned the title, "Playful City."  What does that mean? It means Las Cruces has made play a priority by creating programs that encourage kids to get active.      It also means the city is eligible for $20,000 construction grants to use the community-build process. The community-build process relies on community volunteers in the building of playgrounds. The $20,000 grant money is used for the purchase of playground equipment. The labor to build the playground is donated.      In addition, there are $15,000 and $30,000 access grants  for joint use agreements. These grants  are partnerships with local school districts to open school recreation facilities to the public during non-school hours.       The $15,000 access grants ...

A couple of days ago, I blogged about the wonderful aroma of green chiles roasting and how it signaled the start of fall in Las Cruces, NM.  A comment by Ed Kurosz got me to thinking. He asked "What do green chiles taste like?" I couldn't think of an answer. How do I describe the most wonderful taste in the world?   So I went to the one place where I knew there would be great answers...Facebook.  Answers ranged from "Like nothing you have ever tasted before" to "Heaven with Heat" to "Tastes like home". One of my favorite answers was: "Green chile is like laying on a grassy knoll with all the aromas of the area coming together to enhance your senses and then it slaps you in the face and says "Hey I am green chile! I add so much flavor to your food with just the right amount of spice you ...

Earlier this summer, the American Farmland Trust held a contest to name the best Farmer's Markets in Small, Medium and Large markets and the Las Cruces Farmers & Crafts Market was named #1 in the Large Market Catagory!  What a tremendous feat for them! They've been around for 40 years this year and it's always a fun trip to downtown Las Cruces to check out the wares, crafts, music and artisans. Shoppers check out handmade crafts near the memorial for Saint Genevieve's Church More than likely, this is where Las Cruceans get their first whiff of green chile roasting - which is a true sign that fall is in the air. And that everything is right with the world The most heavenly smell in the world.Proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. When you stroll the Farmer's Market, you're al...

Many years ago, I used to go see a great local band in El Paso, Texas called "Springfire". They were a comedy band that took on a serious note every once in a while.  One of their songs, "Jesus Would Have Loved El Paso", started with this lyric: "The Rio is a lot like the JordanMuddy but it ain't too wideI guess it's a kind of salvationWhen you make it to the other side" Without the Rio Grande, I don't know if the Mesilla Valley would have thrived as it has over the last few centuries. The picture above was taken last August when the waters were flowing for irrigation.   The Rio Grande is the life blood of Las Cruces. Agriculture is key here - cotton, onions, green chile, pecans, watermelon, lettuce, hay...the list is almost endless. Irrigation ditch in Las Cruces - Shalem Colony Trail...

Aggies Oh Aggies! The hills send back the cryWe're here to do or dieAggies Oh Aggies! We'll win this game orKnow the reasons why New Mexico State University - the pride of the Mesilla Valley and home of the Aggies - kicks off their 2011 football season this Saturday at Aggie Memorial Stadium when they take on the Ohio Bobcats. I'll admit it - football at NMSU isn't the best program in the world. It's actually ranked in ESPN's Top 10 Bottom programs for this year. Quite honestly, it's hard to see that. It's a small school that hasn't been to a bowl in 40+ years. I feel bad for the kids that work so hard year in and year out on and off the field. Having said that - the crowd has heart and that's a big reason I went to games year after year. The student section gets into the game as well ...

High school football is, for the most part, a HUGE deal in the Mesilla Valley. There are 3 public high schools in Las Cruces - Mayfield, Las Cruces High and Onate (Own-ya-te).       Onate High School - The Black Knights - is the 'new kid in town' - opening in 1993. It is located on Highway 70, east of town in the ever growing area of Sonoma Ranch and the east mesa. This is a 9-12 school with a very strong presence in academics and sports as well. Although they are not part of the big in town rivalry (Mayfield/Las Cruces High), they have a strong athletic presence in the state thru football, basketball and volleyball. Onate High School sports Calendar for 2011-2012                 Mayfield High School - Home of the Trojans - opened in 1965 and is located in the north part of town on Vall...

I am a first time home buyer, where do I start?       Here is a list of things to do when considering purchasing your first home.    1.  Find a good Realtor to work with.  This should be someone who you feel comfortable with,  who listens well and has the experience to help you through this process.   2.  Get prequalified with a lender.  This process should be fairly quick and painless and is  absolutly  a must before continuing on.  The lender will help you determine your buying power, tell you what cash requirements are necessary, and estimate mortgage payments.  They will give you a letter of prequalification that you will need to make an offer on a property when you find one.   3.  After talking with your lender you will need to decide how much you are comfortable spending on your...

In the late 1960's and early 1970's many towns and cities across the US went through a phase of urban renewal.  Many old downtown areas were 'put aside' as populations centers shifted to what used to be the outlaying areas of cities. It happened in Las Cruces and we lost many historic buildings.  The layout of downtown changed forever and, unfortunately, we'll never be able to get them back.  On the very outskirts of the downtown area sits a building that dates back to the late 1800's - The Amador Hotel.  It was built in 1866 by the Amador family and started out as a one story building for the Amador family.  In 1878, a new home was built across the street and the Amador home became a rooming and boarding house. As Las Cruces grew, so did the Amador. In 1885, a second story was added an...
