Medford Lakes Community Profile  Medford Lakes, New Jersey, was established as an independent municipality in 1939, and started, believe it or not, as a resort! The concept of the resort was to build several cabins of log so they would be durable in both winter and summer. Those cabins, scattered throughout the area and blending in with the pine trees and lakes, soon became a year-round community – which eventually lead to Medford Lakes becoming it’s own community.  To this day, Medford Lakes still has the highest concentration of log cabins in the world - 150 cabins. Located in Burlington County, it is part of the Pinelands. We have 22 lakes throughout our area, over 1500 homes, and are proud of our “small town” heritage. Everyone in Medford Lakes knows each other and we are a very clo...

Spending time with family is always important. In my opinion, something that you don't want to lose sight of, no matter how busy you are or how fast life flys by. It was good to spend time with my parents, my sister, and her family of 6 kids at my sister's house in Medford Lakes, New Jersey. My sister and I are the two not in this picture. But look, Santa Claus was able to join us.         Overall, it was enjoyable to watch my nieces and nephews open up their gifts from Santa this morning.  We did the family gifts Christmas eve, a family tradition for over a decade.                 Some of the kids opening their gifts.. (my parents in the background with my brother-in-law Joe on right) (Bottom - Johnny, Alisha, Joey's back)                 More kids opening gifts this morning....

Getting into the Christmas spirit?  I am......         I tried to get the twins in the same pic, both Ava and Joey, but Joey didn't want any part of me. He wanted grandpa.. lol But Ava came over to the tree for me. Can't believe that they are 2 1/2 now.. well, will be 3 in April. Such good and cute kids...                       Full shot                 Joey wouldn't stand next to the Christmas tree for me, but I got him playing in the basement under the train set up.                It was a busy end of the week with my nieces and nephews. If you didn't read these two posts, I talked about it here. My nephew Johnny was in a concert on Thursday night and my niece Katerina was in the NutCracker on Friday night.  Both did an awesome job. Who is the best singer and drummer in the world? My...

Halloween Fun of 2010 in Medford Lakes New Jersey As some of you know, my sister and brother-in-law have 6 kids. The two youngest are twins, a girl and a boy. Well, one of the twins, Ava, didn't want to get out of her stroller for the picture. The two oldest, Katerina and Johnny, where with their friends Trick or Treating this year. So, we have Alisha as a Turkey... Andrew as the Army guy... and Joey as the Prince. Ava is the Princess....           So we took the kids out in Medford Lakes, New Jersey and didn't see much until it got darker. But we did come across this witch that didn't fare to well. I keep instructing the witches in the local on how to fly and that they need to slow down when traveling amongst many trees. Maybe they need a lesson from the witches in Salem, MA.      ...

Yesterday we celebrated my mom's 66th birthday at my sister's house in Medford Lakes, New Jersey. We were waiting for my mom and dad to show up, since they were playing golf earlier.   So I was out with my niece and nephew while they played in their kid vehicles.  Joey decided to hope in with my niece Ava and let a women drive him around.  Smart kid...  lol (Joey & Ava - Twins - 2 yrs & 2 months old)           Here is Joey with some ice cream cake on his face. Ava had some but my sister had wiped her face before I could take the picture. If you never had ice cream cake before, it's awesome. I think the first time I had it was for my 15th birthday, which was not to long ago.  ;o) In any case, it was cute hearing the kids singing happy birthday to my mom.  My sister said that they h...

Father's Day with my Dad, David Belonger                                                                              The day started with going to the Medford Lakes Country Club in Medord Lakes, NJ for a round of golf on Father's Day. I was looking forward to not only playing some golf with my dad, but just to get out on the golf course since it was my first time this year. My brother-in-law, Joe Cleaver, joined us.  It would only be fitting considering that he is the husband of my sister.  ;o)  ps... and we are very lucky to have him as part of our family. I can't believe that it's been like 15 years. In any case, the course was looking in good shape and I felt okay after hitting some golf balls on the driving range. My first 2 drives went har...

FAMILY & FRIENDS – So important     As several of you know, my sister adopted 11 years ago. It has turned out to be a wonderful story. It started with the fact that my sister couldn't have kids, well, that is what several specialists had said from all over. So my sister and brother-in-law decided to adopt. They were actually approved to adopt up to 3 kids at once and this took place in Kazakhstan. They adopted a boy and girl, Katerina and Johnny. Well, when they came back after about a solid month in Kazakhstan, because of their adoption process, my sister found out that she was pregnant.  So about 7 months later, she had Andrew. After about a year, thinking about my niece being a lonely girl, surrounded by 2 boys, they decided to adopt a girl. They named her Alisha. Now, about 4 ye...

Medford Lakes enjoyed another successful Canoe Carnival for 2008 this past weekend.  As always it was a great time for the community, families and friends to celebrate the uniqueness that's Medford Lakes. There had originally been weather reports calling for showers in the evening, but the historical trend in Medford Lakes of no rain on the first Saturday in August was once again upheld.  The the festivities went off without any rain, dispite threatening clouds during the day, and even providing a beautiful sunset of the lake.  Around 9 pm the signal was sounded for the Canoe Floats to dismbark from their dock moorings.  As always, it's amazing to see the ingenuity and creativity that displayed by local individuals and groups and on display for the thousands of appreciative spectators su...

One of the highlights of the Medford Lakes experience is the annual Canoe Carnival held on the first Saturday in August.    Everyone looks forward to this time where the community comes together to celebrate the uniqueness of Medford Lakes and enjoy the fellowship of family and friends in a Mardi Gras type of atmosphere, culminating in a parade of canoe floats on the water.  (That description doesn't do it justice, you have to experience it!)  There are a lot of preparations and planning leading up to this event, including the campaigning and voting on the King and Queen of the Canoe Carnival and the Court.  They were announced yesterday, and will be appearing on one of the procession of floats that will embark from their docks at dark, when the signal to begin is given.   Kids and peop...

Yesterday, Medford Lakes celebrated with it's traditional Memorial Day Parade lead off by the Shawnee High School Marching Band, followed by herds of kids in their decorated bikes, and then followed by local honories, officials and a long line of police, fire and emergency vehicles from Medford Lakes and the surrounding communities of Medford, Southampton, Shamong, Evesham and Tabernacle townships and the Forest Service. It was quite a large group of kids that participated, Medford Lakes owes a lot of it's vitality to the youth and young families in the community as well as those who are raised families and are still active in the community. As always, the highlight of this event is when the parade ends up for memorial ceremonies at the Borough's municipal building. The national anthem, ...

A recent article in the Colony News announced that the Medford Lakes Environmental Commission hosted an underground oil storage tank information session at Cathedral in the Woods on March 11, 2008, where subject matter experts served on panel to present information and answer questions of residents.  Since the community consists primarily of older houses, the environmental commission is concerned about the many older tanks buried in the town, especially in a lake and well-water community.  Bear steel tanks placed directly in the soil can begin to corrode in as little as 15 years, according to a study by the U.S. EPA.  The information session was organized to ensure that residents are aware of state assistance to cover some of the costs of removing these underground tanks through the NJE...

According to a past article in the Colony Club News, Medford Lakes is in the process of a Phase I stocking of fish in Upper/Lower Aetna and the Mirror chain.  This is part of the recovery efforts from the 2004 flood that required the dams to be repaired and the lakes refilled.  Now, based on advice by experts, they will be stocking minnows and bluegills this year to establish the feeder fish population.  In the spring of 2009, they will be stocking bass.   The programmed was developed with the help of two residents, Bill Find and John Bonk who developed that plan that was submitted to the fishery.  The Medford Lakes Girl Scouts will also be lending their time to build habitats for the small feeders to hide an reproduce.  They will be placed in several location in the Atena and Mirrors l...
