Surfing LBIThere are plans to add 3 new surfing beaches to Long Beach Township.  The township currently has 19 surfing beaches.  Check out the waves by clicking on the picture below for live web-cam pictures. Surfing only beaches are selected on three criteria: adequate distance along the jetties, to allow a reasonable safety buffer zone separating surfers from swimmers and surfers from jetties; beaches must be relatively less crowded when compared with other township beaches and, of course, must have a decent sandbar for good wave break.The township's 12 miles of divided beach -- spanning two-thirds of the Long Beach Island coastline -- account for 10 percent of The Jersey Shore's 122 miles of sandy beach. BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE - RE-LIGHTING EVENT - JANUARY 1, 2009 Maybe it's because I was born and raised here in New Jersey, (or maybe I'm not partial at all), I think the Barnegat Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful lighthouses!  We call it "OLD BARNEY", located at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Barnegat Light, NJ.  The most northern tip of Long Beach Island and right at the Barnegat Inlet which channels the Barnegat Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. On January 1, 2009, at approximately 4:30pm, the 150th anniversary of its opening, the Barnegat Lighthouse will reactivate its beacon for the first time since 1948.
