Long Beach Island, or “LBI” to the informed, is a barrier island off the coast of Ocean County, New Jersey. Even at the widest point of this 18-mile-long island sprinkled with small shore towns like Barnegat Light, Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars, Ship Bottom, Surf City and Long Beach Township, you’re never more than half a mile from the other side. The island has been continuously settled since 1690, initially being a destination for hunters. Barnegat Inlet, to the north of the island, was an important path for freight shipments and whaling from the 17th century through the 20th century. Barnegat Bay, bordering the western side of the island is an integral part of the Intracoastal Waterway. (The Intracoastal Waterway is a 1,500-mile inland waterway along the Atlantic coast running from Bost...

There are many great places to have breakfast and brunch on LBI on the Jersey Shore, but two get a special mention in Philly Magazine:“On the northern end of Long Beach Island, the all-day eatery Mustache Bill’s Diner gets the kind of attention any fine-dining chef would die for (see: Food Network spot, *James Beard Award), and for good reasons: buttery omelets, crispy potatoes, and a pancake cooked around a runny egg. It’s worth enduring any LBI traffic for. For food that won’t require a wait, you can get a quality bagel that sandwiches egg and cheese or flavored cream cheese at any location of Bagels & Beyond. (Bonus: The crumb cake — which is an LBI thing — is heavy on the crumb.)”Mustache Bill's Diner Menu  Broadway & Eighth St., (Central Ave.)Barnegat Light609-494-0155Bagels and Be...

More than 40 seals have become stranded on the Jersey Shore beaches in the last 10 days according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center based in Brigantine. There were reported stranding’s throughout Ocean County; from Point Pleasant to to LBI.  Strandings have also been reported at other various locations on The Jersey Shore. According to the Center, now that the ice is melting, the seals are out in front of the beaches, feeding. Homes on LBI While it’s not unusual to spot seals at this time of year, more are showing up on the Jersey Shore than normal -- especially for such a short time span. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a private, non-profit organization, started in 1978 with a handful of volunteers and a C.E.T.A. grant, was founded, and is directed by Robert Schoelkopf. The Ce...

Beach replenishment at the Jersey Shore got a big boost this week when the State Supreme Court overruled a $375,000 award in a Harvey Cedars beach replenishment case, saying the project in fact provided benefits to the property owners.  A state appellate court had ruled last year that the borough pay $375,000 to the couple to compensate them for having a portion of their property taken for the Army Corps of Engineers beach replenishment project, partially obstructing their ocean view. The Harvey Cedars beach project was completed in 2010.  But in other towns on Long Beach Island there are still property owners that refuse to sign easements for beach replenishment, thereby stalling these efforts.Even staunch defenders of property rights have cited this case as different in that these home...
