Limited land at Cascade Ridge in Waterville Valley Resort, NHMark Twain said it best.  Buy land, they’re not making it anymore.  Nowhere is that statement more true than at Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Waterville Valley’s premiere home site subdivision, Cascade Ridge, is made up of just 19 parcels located in the historic north end of the mountain resort village. The lots at Cascade Ridge are the last large home sites to be developed in Waterville Valley, a planned community whose development is restricted by a master plan and its location in the midst of 700,000+ acres of National Forest.  Waterville Valley is a small resort town located two hours north of Boston, with only 500 acres of private land and just 300 residents.    Sixteen of the 19 home sites ...

You see them from time-to-time.  The 'Welcome to (insert state). Now Go Home' bumper stickers.  I just saw one on a shiny, brand-spanking new pick-up truck at the local market.  The driver had on the latest snowboarder outfit (for lack of a better term), and I bet if I peeked in the back of the truck I would have seen the newest riding gear, too. Probably all paid for with wages earned catering to the vacationers and visitors who flock to the Granite State's ski resorts.  Ski resorts that couldn't afford to stay open if weren't for the tourists.   Tourism pays mortgages in New Hampshire, and puts food on the table, and keeps the highways paved, and the roadways plowed, and store shelves stocked...the list goes on and on. Tourism is the second largest industry in New Hampshire in terms o...

Moose Run: Waterville Valley Resort's last subdivisionMark Twain once said, "Buy land, they're not making it anymore."  That is certainly the case at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire.  You drive through eight miles of National Forest, along the banks of the energetic Mad River, to get to Waterville Valley.  Tucked in the White Mountains, this pedestrian-friendly village is comprised of just 500 acres of privately owned land and is completely surrounded by National Forest.  Waterville Valley is like an island in the middle of the forest, and that creates a permanent limited supply of land.  Unlike in other communities, there isn’t another 25, 40, or 100 acres right down the road that someone will develop next.  What you see in Waterville Valley on the valley floor is all there is.  Moose...

If you watched the Vancouver Winter Olympics (and who didn't?!), you may have noticed that a freestyle skier with signature pigtails popping out of her helmet - Hannah Kearney - won the first gold medal for the United States.  New Englanders, and New Hampshirites in particular, are beyond excited because Hannah's a hometown girl.  She is a member of the Waterville Valley Black and Blue Trail Smashers ski club, better known as BBTS, and has been coached by legendary freestyle coach, Nick Preston, of Waterville Valley, NH.  Learn more about the history of freestyle skiing - and its birth right here in Waterville Valley, NH - by watching this excellent television program produced by WMUR's newsmagazine, NH Chronicle. Wolves in New Hampshire? A couple of weeks ago as I was driving home from work at night an animal ran out of the forest and across the road in front of my car.  I saw it clear as day.  It was a wolf...or, at least it looked like the wolves I've seen on TV and in movies.  I told my husband about it, but he said I probably saw a coy dog, not a wolf.  Well, I've seen coy dogs before and this was definitely NOT an eastern coyote.  And its appearance was wild and not domesticated. Being an obsessive Googler, I searched online for photos of wolves (yup, the animal I saw looked just like the gray wolves I found in the Google images - example at right), but the news articles I found online indicated that there have been no confirmed sightings or killings of wild wolves in New Hampshire in many,...
