When are our Murphy NC property taxes due for 2014? Q:    Oh no! We haven’t gotten a tax bill for our new home here in the mountains yet. When are our Murphy, NC  property taxes due for 2014? A:     Real property taxes are paid “in arrears” and are due September 1 of each year. This means you won’t be getting your property tax bill until September of 2014 and have until January 5, 2015 to pay without interest.  If the 5th falls on a weekend, you have through the next business day. Interest starts on January 6th  with 2% the first month and ¾ % each month thereafter until paid. The current tax rate for Cherokee County, NC is $0.52 per $100 of your assessed tax valuation. Depending on the area you live in there is also a fire district tax. So you're typical home assessed at $150,000 value... 07/09/2014

The Parson's Pub in downtown Murphy NC for great Food and Tavern! One of the newest eatery and fast growing favorite here in Cherokee County is a wee bit of English and Irish. We stopped in for lunch after our Coldwell Banker Caravan and were very pleasenatly surprised at the great food and atmosphere. Traditional Irish dishes and more selections of beer than you can imagine. The Reuben was huge, my Vegetarian dish so flavorful and Lee's Shepherds Pie was the best hes ever had. Taken at face value, a penny doesn't buy you much anymore, if anything.  It used to.  During our parents and grandparents days, a penny bought a lot of things. Most notably, Penny Candy got its name because a piece of candy cost a penny. Oh, the memories of these special trips with our grandfather to the corner store for penny candies are some of our fondest!Inflation year after year after year has certainly eroded the penny's value. It must be Dogwood Winter here in the Murphy, NC mountains!  We had some chilly temperatures and lots of rain and wind to welcome us this morning. Old-timers in the Appalachians know there are several named "winters" following winter, and Dogwood and Blackberry Winter are perhaps the best known. It’s a term used by Southerners to describe a period of cold weather that coincides with the blooming of the local dogwoods and blackberries, usually occurring in the mid April to May months. The dogwoods are all bloomed out and the blackberries are soon to follow.   With the possibility of frost happening during Dogwood and Blackberry winters, many Southerners here in Murphy, NC wait until after these winters have passed to plant tender vegetables and annuals. Growing Shiitake Mushrooms in the Murphy NC mountains just might be a little easier than you think. We took a class on growing them down at  Persimmon Creek Campground, just west of historic downtown Murphy and learned so much. Owners Tony and Karen have created a true haven for family friendly camping - just like it used to be back when we were young. Our day started out a little chilly, but Karen & Tony had a fire going and plenty of hot coffee and cider waiting for our small group of eight. After getting to meet everyone we were all eager to get started. Under the pavilion we had a video presentation and examples of logs, identifying common threats to Shiitakes and lots of Q&A time.
