The Triangle area of North Carolina is full of parks and recreation areas.  And the little town of Holly Springs, just southwest of Raleigh and Cary, has a wonderful park of it's own. The Parrish Womble Park, or just "Womble Park" as referred to by the residents, is a beautiful place to spend a lazy afternoon with the kids or the dog.          This 46 acre park was purchased in 1997, and has four lighted baseball/softball fields, along with soccer fields, horseshoe pits, and a volleyball court.                  There are two great playgrounds adjacent to each other - one for the smaller kids, with a couple of swings. Nearby is a large covered picnic shelter with about a dozen tables - which can be rented out for family events, but most often has plenty of room for picnics and birthday...

Pick Your Own Strawberries - Strawberry Farms Near Raleigh, NC   Just a few days ago, we took our children to Vaughan Farms in Holly Springs to pick some strawberries.  This is the first time they've been to a "farm", and my son was quite excited!   Just a few minutes in the car, and we arrived at Vaughan Farms.     We got some large white buckets from the produce stand, and were told to pick on Row 15.  There must have been 40 or 50 rows of strawberry plants, stretching in gentle curves.                We had a great time filling up our buckets.  There were so many red, ripe strawberries.  And the further we went back in our row, the more berries there were. At only $1.60 per pound, it didn't cost much at all for two heaped full buckets.              We took our berries to the produce ...

Holly Springs Document Shredding "Shred-A-Thon" May 24, 2008 One of the more dreaded aspects of Spring Cleaning or preparing to move can be going through old paperwork, sorting what should stay and what should go. Bankrate.com has a great guide on what to keep, and for how long. A couple basics: Paycheck Stubs:  Keep payroll stubs until your W-2 arrives.  Once you check to make sure everything matches, shred the paycheck stubs. Bills:  Keep all bills until the payment clears.  After the check clears, keep any bills for large purchases like jewerly, rugs, appliances, furniture, and computers, to provide proof of value in case of any loss or damage. Tax Returns: Hold onto these and the back up documentation for seven years.      Check out the link for more details on which paperwork can s...

Looking for a Rain Barrel??? Where to Buy Rain Barrels   Holly Springs is having a "Rain Barrel Blockbuster" on Saturday, March 15th.  They've sent a huge order directly to the manufacturer, and the barrels will be available for purchase at the Bass Lake Park & Retreat Center. Barrels are $75 for 60 gallons, and $85 for 80 gallons.  This is a pretty good discount from regular retail prices, so the Town of Holly Springs is anticipating quite a run on these.  Holly Springs residents get first chance at the barrels, from 8 am - 11 am.  At 11 am, sales open to the general public.  Limit is two barrels per person. Now is a great time to purchase rain barrels.  It's almost spring, and the grass is starting to green.   Planting season starts within the next couple of weeks!  A barrel will most...

How many times have your groceries been loaded into plastic bags, only to have the bag split and the jar of mayonnaise drop and break on the driveway?  By the way, why is it always the mayonnaise that breaks?  It's got to be the hardest thing to clean up...  Many of my favorite stores, at least in my area, are now offering an inexpensive alternative to the "Paper or Plastic" question. Resuable Shopping Bags Walgreens was the first place I noticed resuable shopping bags for sale.  I picked up enough for all my groceries - at $.99 each, they weren't a bad investment, and I figured it was the only way to stop all the plastic bags that fall out of my cupboard every time I open it.  I hate to throw them away, so I save them... for something.   I stuck the bags into the door pocket of my car,...

Holly Springs Relocation Holly Springs Library Nothing to read in the house?  Need a book on CD for the commute home?  The Holly Springs Library has you covered! Then head over to the new Holly Springs Library, just a few blocks from the intersection of Main Street and Holly Springs Road.  It's been open for just over a year, but this is the first time I've checked it out.   It's very impressive.  The landscaping is pretty and tasteful.  A roundabout in front of the library ensures slow traffic, and is accented with brick pavers.  The Holly Springs Branch Library opened in December 2006, and offers all kinds of community activities, both through the library itself and through the adjoining Holly Springs Cultural Center.  The library itself is about 8,000 square feet, with lots of open s...

Despite a downturn in the residential real estate market in many areas across the country, the Triangle posted yet another record year in 2006 for new home starts and closings. From what I can see, the Triangle housing market is in excellent shape through 2007 with a potential for significant housing equity gains, particularly for homebuyers who plan to remain in their house for the long run. In fact, the Raleigh-Cary MSA was rated #15 in appreciation in the country for 2007 by a leading housing authority. The Triangle had very favorable home price-to-income ratios and even better mortgage servicing cost-to-income ratios. The latter ratio is currently below the local historical average implying no widespread financial overstretching to purchase a home in the region. Forbes Magazine name...

Holly Springs is a town in Wake County with a population of over 15,000 and just received the title of "The fastest growing town in The Carolinas".  Triangle growth started heading South as Cary began to boom to the North.  From 1992 to 1998 Holly Springs grew from 900 to an estimated 6000 in 1998. Holly Springs continues to grow and evolve as the town becomes more accessible for commuters into Research Triangle Park.  Road work that will make this possible includes the new 55 Bypass, widening of HWY 1, and access to the future extension of I-540.  The Town now boasts two public elementary schools a middle school, and the new Holly Springs High School. A Wake County southwest branch library and a cultural arts facility opened in early December 2006.  One of the most recent focuses for t...

Of all of the towns surrounding Raleigh and Cary that are growing rapidly Holly Springs happens to be growing the fastest. The Town of less than 1,000 in 1990 grew to more than 9,000 in 2000. In 2006, the population was approximately 17,500.   Speaking of growth, Holly Springs is projected to nearly double its population to just over 31,000 during the next decade.  If that is as accurate as most projections around here have been during the last ten years it will prove to be on the low side - perhaps by a considerable amount.  Novartis, the drug maker, is bringing 350 jobs to Holly Springs, Wal-Mart will be building a store across the street from Novartis, Harris Teeter is expected to be the anchor of a 250,000 square foot shopping center, Boylan will build a mixed-use development of 9...
