I wanted to make a difference in someones life.  Habitat for Humanity does just that.  I set out to find a worthy cause and this is what I choose. I am on the board with Habitat for Humanity in Macon County Franklin, NC and wanted to give back in some way.  One of my first projects was a Poker Run and raffling off a brand new Harley-Davidson on the day of the Run but we have not sold enough tickets yet.  We have had this bike at many events and selling average of 10 tickets per event.  I never thought it would be this hard to sell 300 tickets.  I think its the economy working against me.  ...

Southwestern Community College again ranks in the TOP 10 in the U.S. of the America's 50 best community colleges according to Wahington Monthly. It is pretty amazing that our college ranks in the Top 10 considering there are over 1,000 community colleges in the country.  Back in 2007 we ranked 4th in the Nation and we came in nith in 2010.  SCC is one of only 2 colleges that ranked in the Top 10 in both 2007 and 2010.  Ratings are based greatly on the Community College Survey of Student engagement, a published nationwide survey. Institutional Profile: Southwestern Community College was established in Sylva, NC on Dec. 1, 1964 as the Jackson County Industrial Education Center, a satellite unit of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute. Since achieving independent status in the fall of 19...

Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend where ever you are. I woke up this morning and its 58 degrees in the mountains of Franklin, NC.  I can tell the summer season is coming to a end when the sun is setting early over the mountains and coming up later in the morning.  A clear sky, crisp air and the sun is shinning makes it a perfect day to go for a ride on my motor cycle with my husband and friends.  We I will be getting our leathers out when its this chilly.  Going up the Gorge Rd. (hwy. 64 E.) is the awesome Cullasaja River that comes down the mountain from Hilghlands, NC through Franklin.  On that road is many places to pull over and view the falls.  The locals swim and slide down the rocks at Bust your Butt Falls.  There is Bridal Veil Falls that you drive under and my favorite is Dry Falls ...

Septic Inspections, Well Inspections, Home Inspections, waste of money with some Inspections!  Why would a underwriter ask for a well & septic inspection report?  Oh, its not a local bank that uses local rules requirements possibly. Here in the mountains of Franklin, NC most of the components and working parts of a septic system are underground and are not naturally visible. Inspecting a typical septic system then presents a challenge. I have lived here in Franklin, NC for 18 years and have only heard of a few problem with septic systems.  Usually its due to being very very old or the system was too small to handle the amount of people in a home.  Some folks have their tanks pumped out, we have never done this and do not see the need to do so. It is impossible to check all of the septic...

In a beautiful part of the Nantahala National Forest near Standing Indian Campground is this little jewel of a waterfall called Big Laurel Falls. A short .6 mile hike that follows the path of an old logging railroad, the trail meanders along a raging noisy Big Laurel Branch creek with lots of big boulders.        Although most books rate this trail as easy, I would say due to the root rutted trail it is more on the easy side of moderate. There are no steep grades on the hike only mild inclines and descents but the rough trail makes it a cautious hike in some areas making the half mile distance seem further then it is.    Once there however, you are rewarded with a beautiful falls and an overall enjoyable a hike with unusal trees and lots of rhodadendron along the way. One warning t...
