What's Happening at the Flat Rock Playhouse? We are very lucky here in Hendersonville to have access to great theater. The area has enjoyed Flat Rock Playhouse for 60 years! The playhouse has become very well known around the country and has attracted some very good actors. With it's humble beginnings in 1937, and moving from location to location, it had struggles. But those who were there in the early days persevered and in 1952 they came to purchase the land that has been the home to the Theater ever since. In 1961, by a Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theater of North Carolina. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now an eight month season of plays including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, an...

Santa Claus wasn’t the only one traveling through time and space on Christmas Eve. The Office Manager had to go to the Animal Emergency Clinic at 11pm that night. The experience couldn’t have been more different and so much better than our terrible experience a week ago at the other emergency clinic. For the most part we feel there is good access to excellent veterinary care in Western North Carolina…during normal business hours. After-hour animal emergency service is a different matter. When we first moved here, the vets in Haywood and Jackson Counties rotated emergency “on call” services during the off hours. That all stopped several years ago when the REACH Emergency Animal Clinic was built in Asheville. From Balsam, NC that is at least a 45 minute drive. For anyone who lives west o...

St. John in The Wilderness Episcopal Church, located at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock NC, was built in the 1829 originally. It later burned down and was rebuilt in 1836. It was built by a Charles Baring, as part of the 400 plus acres he purchased for his wife Susan, to escape the hot and humid summers in CHarleston. He accumilated ownership of over 4,000 acres of land in Flat Rock and then his friends from Charleson migrated there in the summers as well. In 1852 the Barings' deeded the church to an Episcopal Bishop, The grounds are absolutely beautiful. It is the most peaceful place to walk. There are tiered graveareas, and flower beds, shaded in old trees. It has remained an Episcopal Church since this time. I have put together a slide show so that you can enjoy this Historic pa...

I just got an email from Highland Lake. They are starting a new concert series and it looks like a fun event. Live Music Comes to The Lake House! They opened with Dwayne Briggs on Thursday, October 8 and today is the next one. These events start with a pot luck, followed by the live guest. The time frame is from 6pm to 9 pm. Tonight's guest is Mieka Pauley and her website is: http://mieka.com/  if you want to check her out. Since this is fairly new event, there aren't any further guest lined up on Highland Lake's website. But for future reference if you want to stay on top of it, here is their website:  http://www.highlandlake.com/events-workshops They say it is going to be a monthly event. This is exciting. Hendersonville can use some new events. I for one am looking forward to it. Tha...

I knew Flat Rock residents were charitable.  I'm just happy that others recognized this as well.  Community activists Robert and Doris Eklund were awarded the Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award for their service and philanthropic efforts for the Henderson County community.  Their work with the Council on Aging as well as the Henderson County Heritage Museum were only two of the many local charities they received the Sauer award for.  The Henderson County Community Foundation, who hosted the awards luncheon and is the recognition committee for the annual Sauer award, continues to receive donations from other generous members of the community even through these hard times.  Through their Community Fund, they are able to give grants and help people create their own ph...

Flat Rock is that small, hospitable town where everyone knows your name and is happy to watch out for their fellow neighbor. The Village takes great pride in its community, provides a nurturing environment for local artists, promotes age diversity and actively keeps real estate values stable. Students living in Flat Rock attend public schools in the great Henderson County School System, which encourages parental involvement in children's education. The Flat Rock Playhouse hosts comedies, musicals and dramas fit for the entire family and has been rated as one of the top ten theaters in the entire country. It's not just the people that are warm and inviting. The natural beauty that Flat Rock real estate has to offer is what entices people most about visiting and even settling here. The Ca...

The Cherokee Nation once proclaimed what today we know and love as Flat Rock as their hunting grounds.  For early settlers it became a place business people, planters and their families to escape malaria and the oppressive summer heat/humidity of coastal South Carolina.Merchants from the seaport of what is now known as Charleston would meet with Cherokee braves on the "Great Flat Rock" to do their trading of beads, trinkets, etc.  It was in 1807 that the "Great Flat Rock" gave the site a name for a pioneer settlement that would grow up around it in what would become Hendersonville NC.By 1827 Flat Rock was thriving (the Buncombe Turnpike had been completed from Asheville to join the Poinsett Highway in upper South Carolina.)  All kinds of industry starting taking place such as grist an...
