"MY! This land is Beautiful!!!, " said my "Baby Boomer" clients as we looked at the land. (see photo)    I am excited about theprospects for Asheville real estate clients, a retired airline pilot and his wife  who refer to themselves as quintessential Baby Boomers, and their relocation to beautiful Western North Carolina— getting settled in a new home here in Asheville.    But they have some special requests for this beautiful Asheville land   They are serious about downsizing from their current 5,000 square foot equestrian estate to a home of less than 3,000 square feet— they really want a  sunny gardening area, a green-friendly, energy efficient home— and they want to stay living in this home until they are in their 100s.   OH! And they need to have enough room to pasture their horses...

Drovers Road Preserve-  Today’s Tribute to Days Gone By Asheville Real Estate Journal    Drovers Road Preserve is an Asheville area conservation-oriented development with historical roots. Aptly named for its still visible trail, Drovers Road celebrates days gone by.   When you visit Drovers Road, look for the trail just inside the entrance to the 186-acre eco-sensitive development. (see photo) You will find a perfectly preserved road that once connected drovers to and from the markets of Asheville’s city center.     The historic wagon road is honored with plaques; it’s a story being told as you enter the preserve. And you may also notice that while there is a new, and carefully planned, paved road right beside it, the worn path now serves to connect the development’s residents to a pie...

Are you interested in  Eco-Friendly Development ? One Asheville area eco-community may have some answers for you. Creating an eco-friendly development starts with planning how the site on acreage comes together and will unfold. There are questions that come up before one home is built that beg to be answered:  How will this development work with natural resources  by preserving topsoil and trees and reducing storm water runoff?  How  energy efficient building and an increased use of alternative energy sources lead to sustainable development? What is the plan for using green building materials? And is there a plan for educating homeowners and building professionals on the features and benefits of deep-green construction?  When just yesterday I visited Hickory Nut Forest Eco-Community nea...

David Tuch, VP at Equinox Environmental has a wealth of knowledge and experience. A presenter at the 2009 GREEN HOMES (and Land)  Tour, Tuch is involved in an array of eco-community developments in the Greater Asheville, NC area. During the presentation time, Tuch, an expert consultant for the Mountain Landscapes Initiative, talked about  how  we can grow local economies in North Carolina's mountain region without threatening the natural assets that attract new people and new investment. He also looked at  how to adjust to change in the mountains without sacrificing community character and sense of place.   Following that thought he asked . . .  "WHERE is the perfect place to construct the green-built home of your dreams?" If I were to choose, and it would be hard because Asheville is f...

"invisible living forces" I am looking at this photo I shot "in the backyard" of a unique home in Asheville' s mountains this week. We were previewing it for a client due to arrive on Monday. I didn't realize when I shot this that it told a story...a tale of "invisible living forces".. that easily can come into play.... Like neighborly acts of good will  these "forces" (symbolized here by the cascading falls)  seem to have rewards. ...they can  be small but meaningful shifts.... An elderly gentleman tips his hat and waves at his wife of 50 years, and suddenly she feels seventeen again....A 5'2 mom hugs her 6'3 son, and suddenly they both light up!  Possibly, like making a choice to ford a stream, those "invisible living forces" hidden right beneath our feet can make all the difference i...

1. Grab them from the curb. You've seen them. Buyers hunkered low in their cars in front of your house, doing drive-bys before deciding whether to request a showing or attend an open house. Make these potential buyers fall in love with your home from the street by adding potted plants and flowers, power-washing patios and walkways, weeding the garden and mowing the lawn. It's your first chance to make a good impression, so you've got to make it count. 2. Make it sparkle.Pretend that your mother or mother-in-law is coming for a visit. Think hotel clean. Mop, dust, vacuum, wash windows, baseboards - even the cat. Remember that people will look in your cupboards, under your sinks and in your closets. Also, pay particular attention to odors. You might even consider consulting a neutral nose ...

I met a horse-loving visitor not long ago. She was thinking of relocating to Asheville and was looking for  "...a  turnkey organic farm with a good horse barn where  like-minded people could share the acreage and facilities... " .  I recommended she take on of the AshevilleGREEN RELOCATION TOURS specifically designed  for folks looking for horse farms and/or acreages. Here in the Asheville area where sustainabilityis highly regarded and organic agriculture is on the rise, taking the time to get to know the area and topography, especially if you are into horses,  just makes sense to me. Rolling and  south-facing property is at a premium, so seeing a sampling of a few gems with southern exposure and good trails is a real plus. The Equine Property Tour includes a south-facing farm on over ...

SUN OVER THE MOUNTAINS on the dawn of a new day . Here in Asheville, a sunrise really can take your breath away. Do you suppose that a picture can take you to places that no amount of explaining can? I think so. That is why I am starting the SOLAR ENERGY SERIES that follows with a set of three photos I took here in the mountains and coves of our area.  They remind me of the power and splendor of the Sun. It is a good thing, as I discuss in the following series, to take advantage of the gifts beyond that special energy of spirit they evoke....but right now...this picture says it all for me...

WHERE is the perfect place to construct the green-built home of your dreams? Possibly on a remarkable building site  in one of Asheville, North Carolina's  eco-communities. "GREEN" is the word here in Western North Carolina's mountains.   More and more here in Asheville we are noticing a trend toward sustainable environments, and more and  more. Asheville is becoming the "hub' of green and sustainable development.  (Photo to the right of the meadows at Drovers Road Preserve courtesy of David Tuch, VP Equinox Environmental.) So I have been touring various eco-communities in the Asheville, NC area to find out what this is all about.  We started with Hickory Nut Forest. (Worth your visit!)  Today we are traveling with Eco Certified® Real Estate Consultant, Bill Westel to check out Drovers ...

The third meeting of the Fairview Heritage Coalition was on March 10th, 2007. There were approximately 15 people in attendance. The meeting was a follow up to two prior community meetings dealing with the tremendous amount of development that is occurring in Fairview. A steering committee has been formed along with task forces dealing with growth/management and land planning issues, property taxes, and water/environmental issues. Chairpersons have volunteered to lead each task force. The next steering committee meeting will be on March 24th to discuss various organization issues. I have volunteered to be on the steering committee given my prior experience in dealing with community growth issues in Florida. It should be interesting!

The residents of Fairview will be having their third meeting this Saturday, March 10th at the library to discuss over-development and how they might be able to influence this process as more and more land is succumbing to subdivisions. The Western North Carolina Alliance has also been participating in these meetings and is helping the community organize to deal with this pressing issue. Community members have been discussing and focusing on community sustainability and how to preserve the quality of life they have come to love.    There will be a steering committee meeting on Saturday, March 24th at 9:30am.
