Recently I was previewing some $125,000.00 and below properties for some clients and my search came up with 8 that could be promising.  It took me all afternoon to drive in all directions and I did find  a couple of really, cute, adorable cottages here in the W. Carolina Mtns .; well worth the money they were asking.  Any of you that know the Highlands and Cashiers, NC area, know that it is has some of the most expensive homes in America or in close competition with....beach front property and islands, etc.   (Yes, we even have an island with homes for sale on it, high-end homes.) You boat there to get home.   Well, there's still room for we that want to live here and be the 'working class' .  Such was the friends/clients that I was searching for. Aghast was not 'my' wording when I came...

I'm guilty.  When you receive as many emails as we Realtors do, and as many blog posts that we try to answer to or learn from, I'm guilty, but maybe you do it too.  I have just come from 707 emails because I was 'out of pocket' for a week and WOW !!!  When you're trying to catch-up, I confess that I first look at the title of the blog, and if it interest me, I click on it.  But, the 2nd thing that I do, is look at the face of the person that wrote it.  Hmmmm...No, I'm not going for the best looking, cutest title,  not at all.  What I am looking for in that face is genuineness, humility,  respect, approachability.   Life has a way of hardening us from hard times or a way of softening us from hard blows.  Those are the faces that I want to 'approach'.   The soft ones.   Those that at leas...

Come Enjoy the SHOW!Western North Carolina Residents Witness First Show of Fall Colors(And Wish To Share the View) September 22nd marked the first official day of Fall this year, and evidence of the change in seasons is just beginning to take place on the southern crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. A rolling sea of green trees is slowly transforming to a rainbow of color as the leaves on the hardwoods begin to change. Unlike years past, 2009's leaf season is expected to be one of the most beautiful to date thanks to all of the rain during this year's spring and summer months. The rainfall should attribute to a more vibrant, longer lasting show of colors.  Fall Colors in Western North Carolina According to Dr. Gary Walker, a professor at Appalachian State Univer...

The dahlia garden at High Hampton Inn in Cashiers North Carolina was in full bloom this weekend.  The effect was stunning.        Hard to believe all that beauty springs from a tuber kinda like a potato.  I read today where dahlias are like dogs, there is one in every size, shape and color.  Definitely worth a closer look.

Chatooga wild and scenic river and a round of golf at Cashier's High Hampton helped re charge my batteries this week.  Our family did a "staycation" this summer as our travel funds were depleted by college expenses and a dwindling revenue stream.  So we headed to the mountains of nearby Western Carolina for some R and R. Cashier's North Carolina was our base of operations and we took full advantage of the outdoor activities the region has to offer.   Tim and I spent the first afternoon trout fishing on the Tuckasegee River near Culowhee, NC, Played a round of Golf at the High Hampton Inn Course and also went trout fishing on the Chattooga  River (paddle faster, I hear banjo music). A little time away from our regular routine gave us the break we needed to re charge our batteries.

In the heart of the mountains of Western North Carolina,, lies an unusually "high valley" community named, Sims Valley.  At the turn of the century this hidden valley was a homestead to one family. Its surrounding ridge lines look  across 35-40 miles of beautiful vistas into the Great Smoky Mountains . Centrally located near the mountain communities of Cashiers and Highlands, Sims Valley is near everything you need or would want out of a mountain gated community.         The nearby town of Cashiers North Carolina has unique mountain plateaus not often seen in the Appalachians, with rock formations rising up to 5,000 feet. At 3485 feet above sea level,  Cashiers offer an unequaled "feel" of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The higher elevation offers a cooler climate to escape the heat of sum...

On January 27, 2009, the Sapphire Valley Master Association (SVMA) purchased Red Bird Golf Course. Included in the purchase were about 30 acres of land, the pro shop building, carts, and other maintenance equipment. The SVMA also owns the Sapphire Recreation Center, the Sapphire Community Center, and the ski area. The association refinanced their existing debt and purchased the golf course with a new note in the amount of $3,153,853 . According to the president of the SVMA, Mr. Walt Green, the association will save approximately $6,500 per month because of favorable interest rates. When the North Carolina Association of Realtors wanted to interview a Realtor with over 30 years experience and find out what insight they may have, they called Elaine Zachary with Silver Creek Real Estate Group. Elaine pointed out that her "best tactic in this market revolves around great customer service that always puts the client first." This attitude, combined with resources and professionalism, sets us apart from other companies and brokers. Many of you are familiar with the devastating effects of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) on the beautiful hemlock trees in our area. According to the US Forest Service, these pests will kill a hemlock tree within a few years. The HWA does not have enough natural enemies here to keep it in check, and the hemlock trees have not built up a resistance to it. The good news is that there are effective insecticidal treatments for infected trees, as well as preventative measures that can be taken to protect healthy trees. The Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance (JMCA) provides helpful tips on how to treat against the HWA and save our properties and forests from this invasive and destructive insect. Visit the JMCA website at http://www.j-mca.org/hemlock.asp.

The other night my husband Robert and I went to a neighborhood restaurant for a bite to eat with some friends of ours. Jimmy Macs is on Hwy 64 in Cashiers, NC, just before the cross roads at Hwy 107. It's the kind of place that I  love to go to for dinner when I don't feel like cooking. The food is reasonably priced and consistently good. When we were there this particular nite, we got a little extra something with our dessert. Our friend introduced us to one of the servers, and told us that he was a great magician. So we humored our friend and watched a couple of card tricks. They were pretty cute, but he won't be seen in Las Vegas anytime soon. Before we left though, he did one more trick that I'm still trying to figure out. He began by tearing a sheet of paper in the three smaller pi...

Well tomorrow starts our summer season here in Cashiers NC. A much anticipated arrival of the visitors and second home owners that drive our real estate market over the next 6 months. I personally am very excited about the new season. Sapphire Valley seems to come alive over the next few weeks. New people wanting to experience everything these amazing mountains have to offer. SUVs with kayaks and canoes strapped to their roofs, Florida vehicles stuffed to capacity with all the makings of a marvelous summer vacation. New friends and old coming together to form memories of this place forever in their thoughts. My 3 year old son, Max, asked me today when we were going down the river. I can't wait to take him down the French Broad next week. His first kayaking trip. Well technically he has...
