BLACK WALNUTS ARE TOUGH I was thrilled when I discovered three large walnut trees on the property we bought in Shell Knob, Missouri. A walnut tree was highly valued in Indiana, our previous home. Being a 'City Girl' before coming here, I was not familiar with harvesting the black walnut. I gleefully picked up these green balls that fell from our trees, mentally adding up the pounds of nuts I could squirrel away (sorry couldn't resist) for holiday baking. So I had all these paper grocery bags filled with the walnut balls- what now? Tried to get the outer green casing off.
