Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier was born in Saint-Lô, France back in 1811 to Louis-Baptiste and Marie-Jeanne. He studied at École Polytechnique in chemistry. He switched to astronomy, particularly celestial mechanics. After graduation he accepted a job at the Paris Observatory. Spending most of his professional life there he became director from 1854-1870 and again from 1873-1877.In 1846, he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences and in 1855, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, his name is one of the 72 names inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.What you may not know about Urbain is that in 1846 he predicted the existence of the then unknown planet Neptune, using only mathematics and astronomical observations of the known planet Uranus.
