Most old timers (farmers in particular) know that you reap what you sow.  You don't just scatter the seeds all over the ground and hope and pray (although that helps) that you get a good crop.  You have to do some prep work.  Till the ground, fertilize, water, cultivate ect.  With a bit of luck and no severe storm and you should reap the benifits.
