A visit to Como Park Zoo just wasn't complete as a kid without stopping for a hot wax molded animal from a Mold-A-Rama machine. These machines were a favorite stop for kids with extra change for a inexpensive souvenir back during a grade school field trip in the 1960's and 1970's. (I can still smell acrid scent of that weird hot wax.) The price was only 50 cents back then. I remember taking my nieces to the zoo in the mid-80's and they were also intrigued by the squished hot wax mold of a Como Park lion or gorilla to take home. I was surprised that the machines still operate today...but less surprised by the price increase. At $2, it is still a bargain. Como Park is still one of my favorite places to visit year round. We enjoy visiting our free admission zoo in St Paul, MN...the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory! It is an awesome place both in the summer and winter. From the time I was a kid it was our family gathering spot with reunions, parties and fun place to spend an afternoon.   Even in a cage, a wild animal can be beautiful. Como Park is one of our favorite family places to visit and take photos. I have done this since I was 17 and a freshman at Hamline University. For fun, I would ride my bike a few miles over to Como Park Zoo and take photos of the animals.  There are more fences rules about feeding the animals than when I started taking pictures. Back then the cougars and jaguars didn't have the screens that I had to shoot through here. But the kitties are just as pretty as ever! 02/22/2012
