Kentlands Pool Procedures for Thunder and Lightning   During the summertime in Kentlands, it is not unusual to have a few thunderstorms. Keep in mind that the life guards at the pools will not wait for it to start to rain before asking everybody to leave the pool area. This is a good topic for family discussions and everybody should put personal safety at the top of their priority list. If you hear even a distant rumble of thunder, immediately move to a safe place.  Do not remain on the pool deck or porch deck.  Covered porches do not protect you from lightning.  The changing rooms and the lower level Clubhouse halls are the evacuation destination to pool patrons.  The pool will close for 30 minutes from the latest sight of lightning or the latest sound of thunder.   Please use the foll...

150 years ago today, Washington was under attack   150 years ago today, Washington was under attack by thousands of Confederate troops lead by Lt. Gen. Jubal Early. The Battle of Fort Stevens began on July 11, 1864.  The battle ended the next day upon the arrival of Union reinforcements. Those of us that use White’s Ferry to cross the Potomac River at Poolesville know that the ferry is named after the general since the location is near the area of the retreat of the Confederate troops as they crossed the Potomac and headed toward the Shenandoah Valley. This battle will be commemorated by living history events over this weekend at Fort Stevens and at Fort Ward in Alexandria. The following link will take you to today’s article by Fritz Hahn in The Washington Post. When the Civil War came ...

When Was the War of 1812 Fought?    It's not a trick question. Yes, the first shots of the war were fired in 1812 when the U.S. frigate President clashed with the H.M. frigate Belvedera in the cold Atlantic waters. But most of the major fighting actually occurred between the years 1813 and 1815. Some people refer to the War of 1812 as the 'second war for independence,' but that, too, is misleading. British invasion had nothing to do with the reasons why the United States went to war. Rather, it was to force the British to give up some despised maritime policies restricting American trade, and to outlaw impressment, the Royal Navy's practice of kidnapping seamen from American merchant vessels.   Please visit these links to view and comment on other blogs.
