The Spooky Side of Sturbridge  A Spooky Contender at the Scarecrow Contest in Sturbridge, MassachusettsPhoto copyright 2010 Kathryn Acciari Living in Massachusetts, where the history of America has very strong roots, it is common to be curious about those who came before us.  Myths, stories, and superstitions abound about haunted ships at sea, witches with special powers, and antique homes with friendly spirits. With fall upon us, and Halloween just weeks away, I thought it would be great fun to explore the spookier side of Sturbridge.  Below are some of the more interesting events geared toward those who enjoy an other-world type of experience. Doo Wop Murder Mystery Dinner/Theatre, Wednesday, October 12 at the Publick House, at 6 pm.  Feast on a fine Yankee dinner whilst attempting to...

Are Sturbridge Home Sales Improving?   Recent reports show that month-over-month home sales are on the rise across the country.  However, when it comes to real estate, local conditions prevail.  This report shows month-over-month single family home sale in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, for 2010 compared to 2011.   Data source: MLS PIN Looking at the graph above, you will notice that 2011 sales are ahead of 2010 figures for the months of January, February, and April.  Sales in 2010 were higher in the months of March and May, most likely due to the $8000 tax credit offered to first-time home buyers the first half of 2010.  For the month of June, there has only been one home sold in 2011; however, the month is not yet over.  An additional six homes are shown to be under contract, which would ...

365 Things to do in Worcester County -Enjoy Uno's late night in Sturbridge.  Have you ever found yourself out with your friends, it's getting late and restaurants are closing?  Well, this is what happens every time I'm in a show in Southern part of Worcester County.  After the show we enjoy going out and celebrating a great run and grabbing a bite to eat. Unfortunately, the show gets out after nine at night and very few places keep their kitchen open that late.  Uno's in Sturbridge let's the good times roll with late hours.  We can order our food and enjoy the ambiance and as long as the kitchen gets our order by 10:00 pm, we're good.  Uno's has many choices.  There is deep dish varieties, I love the thick crust and the multitude of toping choices.  There are also thin crust pizzas and ...

Buyers Get the Deal of the Year in Sturbridge MA     Wow!  That's all I can say.  My buyers purchased this fantastic property in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.  This was truly the deal of the year.  What made this particular property such a great deal?  Here is how my buyers benefited: They had a sharp agent (yes, me) who was able to introduce the buyers to a foreclosed home that appraised much higher than the price they paid for the house Their mortgage pro timed their lock-in just right, saving more money off their already low mortgage rate The bank paid the town's sewer betterment fee, saving the buyers another couple of thousand dollars The bank had the property freshly painted, new carpeting installed, and offered a home warranty This was the best deal I've seen in Sturbridge this year...

Down and Dirty at Hyland Orchards - Sturbridge MA   June 11, 2011:  Today was the Socks for Siberia Festival at Hyland Orchards.  This year I participated in the "Rock Your Socks Off" Trail Run through the orchards, and what a blast.  This was a trail race up and down the rows of apple trees and into the woods surrounding the orchards.  Having had rain all morning, the trail was slippery, squishy, and muddy.  We ran up slopes, through rocky ruts, and over logs.  I finished the race covered in mud from the knees down, finding cover under the pavilion before the clouds opened up a downpour of hard rain. Live musicians were on hand, and as we ran we could hear clips of mountain music drifting through the orchards.  Those present were of hardy stock, having braved the rain to join in the fe...

Benefit Breakfast For Tornado Victims at Sturbridge Coffee House Was a HUGE Success! This past Sunday we had a benefit breakfast at Sturbridge Coffee House for the owner who lost her house in the tornados as well as all of the other victims of the natural disaster that took place here last week.  What an awesome turnout!  We had over 500 people come and raised over $20,000 not to mention the truckload and room full of stuff that we collected.  Thank you so much to everyone that came out and supported the cause!  It was so touching to see the community come together the way it did on Sunday and has continued to do.  Special shout out to Brian Treitman, Chris Rovezzi, Mark Rulli and Alina Eisenhauer for their outstanding leadership and volunteer work!   Here is a short video from Pia Rog...

365 things to do in Worcester County -Enjoy Applebee's in Sturbridge.  When my daughter had 3 hours to "kill" between babysitting job and rehearsal practice, I offered to take her out for dinner.  We decided to venture out to Applebee's in Strurbridge.  Applebee's is a chain restaurant and we knew that the food would be good.  I think that we both can agree that the best part of the meal was the appetizer.  We ordered a spinach and artichoke dip (served hot) which comes with tortilla chips.  The food was fresh, hot, good and filling.     Applebee's had a meal deal and we ordered one appetizer and two entres.  Leanne had a shrimp and pasta dish and she told me that the shrimp to pasta ration was perfect.  I ordered, my old stand by: ribblets.  And as usual they were good.  We had a leisu...

Leadmine Pond Real Estate Update - Sturbridge MA     What's happening in Leadmine Pond real estate?  This time of year tends to be the busiest for waterfront property in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and we are starting to see more activity on all of the lakes.  Leadmine Pond is one of the more quiet of the lakes in Sturbridge.  It is hidden away at the south tip of town, close to the Connecticut border, and holds great appeal for people who prefer quiet lake living.  There is limited public access to this pond, whereas the other lakes in Sturbridge offer easy access to either a beach or public boat ramp. Currently on the Market on Leadmine Pond Opportunities for waterfront living on Leadmine Pond tend to be fairly rare. Currently, two waterfront properties are available on Leadmine Pond. ...

Craving Rovezzi's Bruschetta   As summer approaches, it is natural to look toward putting away the soups and stews and getting out the grill.  Fresh vegetables and fruits are the backbone of summer eating, and personally this time of year I start to crave one particular dish:  the bruschetta served at Rovezzi's Ristorante. This bruschetta is an appetizer at Rovezzi's.  The base is oval-shaped slices of chewey bread, grilled just slightly.  The bread is then topped with mounds of fresh tomatoes, chopped and mixed with garlic and other tasty spices.  The bruschetta is served on a big platter, and the tomatoes are piled at least four inches high. Paired with a nice red wine, the bruschetta makes for a simple yet delectable supper.  I've been craving this all week, and I think it is time to...

Sturbridge Welcomes Bicycle Concepts     A new cycling store opened in Sturbridge, MA, in April and it is already making a favorable name for itself.  Bicycle Concepts, located at 3 Arnold Road, offers supplies and accessories for bicyclists of all sorts.  The Sturbridge store is the second Bicycle Concepts to open in the area; the first is located in Putnam, CT. In addition to offering equipment, Bicycle Concepts intends to reach out to the cycling community by providing time trials, group rides, and training sessions.  For example, they will soon hold a bike maintenance session for female tri-athletes in the area.  The presence of a store like this will fill a great need in Sturbridge, and I offer them a hearty welcome.
