      I shut off the water at the meter. I left the heat on in the kitchen. I insulated the pipes. Why did they freeze? Good question and here's why.... it's cold!   What some folks seem to forget is that insulation does not create heat. It will help to contain heat or slow it's transfer, but it can't make it any warmer. In the winter an unheated basement is cold. In this environment without heat, water will always freeze. It's just a matter of time.   I inspected a home the other day that had electric heat. The current owners were out of town so they decided to save a few bucks and turn the heat off except in the kitchen. They assumed that the water pipes were only present in the kitchen and the bath directly above it, so why heat the rest of the home? That didn't work out so well for ... 01/17/2010

Is this a photo of a large gift or a small cake?  Yesterday was my husband's birthday and with his currently exhaustive work schedule, he did not manage to get home until 9:00 p.m. so a customary dinner was out of the question.  Knowing that I would have to make the celebration quick, I went to my most reliable source for great bakery items, Colella's Market in Hopkinton.  Among their other great features, they bake these wonderful little cakes that are perfect for people who are having late, abbreviated celebrations.  It was a birthday cake - perfect for two!  I was also delighted to find birthday candles at Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Ashland that commemorated something other than a person's age.  The real festivities will have to wait until the weekend when more time allows.  But the mini a... 01/12/2010

my 1st annual holiday pie giveaway turned out to be a big hit and greatly appreciated. In my December e-newsletter I offered a free holiday pie to anyone on my sphere mailing list, who responded. I hired a local well known baker to make the pies ( I offered pumpkin or apple pie) and made arrangements to let her know by a certain date how many i needed and we were off. In my letter I asked for response by december 18th and offered to deliver pies or they could be picked up at my office.  The response was teriffic, and everyone was so appreciative. It was well worth the effort and i will definitely do this again. 12/28/2009

    Hopkinton's Gazebo in the Town Common was rebuilt this year. After 20 years of service, the old gazebo was replaced by this wonderful new structure.  During the summer months the Gazebo is an important gathering place for people in town who come together to sit under the stars and listen to weekly band concerts on the common.  For the holidays, the Hopkinton Gazebo in the Town Common is beautifully decorated to celebrate the spirit of the season.
