Snug Harbor, Duxbury Snug Harbor is on Duxbury Bay in the center of Washington Street. The nearest cross street is Harrison Street. Washington Street runs along the north half of the shoreline in Duxbury from Powder Point to Hall's Corner. Bay Road runs along the southern half of the shoreline. Snug Harbor is a public focal point for local activity in Duxbury. Several popular shops make their home here, including the ever-popular French Memories bakery. On a warm day, there's nothing more pleasant than sitting on the deck with a scone and coffee.  The harbor itself, and the Duxbury Yacht Club, is just off Washington Street. The Duxbury golf course is on the other side of the street, off of Harrison Street. Older, traditional New England homes line the streets near Snug Harbor. In the pa...

Tinkertown, Duxbury Tinkertown is an area on the southwest side of Duxbury. The area runs along both sides of Elm Street and Tobey Garden, north of Tremont Street, from Tremont Street up to the Route 3 overpass. Tinkertown was established in 1757. Many tinkers and other tradesmen, especially those serving the shipbuilding trade, lived here in years past. In the past few years, homes in this neighborhood have sold for prices between about $300,000 to $600,000. The Duxbury public schools start with Chandler Elementary School, then the Alden School, Duxbury Middle School and Duxbury High School. The side streets off of Elm are very quiet. There's a big pond off of Island Creek. It's a wooded area, so it's very pleasant whether it's sunny, rainy or snowing! Like much of Duxbury, many of the...

Apple Hill Lane, Duxbury Apple Hill Lane is a cul-de-sac neighborhood on the west side of Duxbury, near the Chandler Elementary School.   In the past few years, homes in this neighborhood have sold for $495,000 to about $550,000. The Duxbury public schools start with Chandler Elementary School, then the Alden School, Duxbury Middle School and Duxbury High School. I lived here once, over ten years ago. It's really nice, quiet and friendly. It's surrounded by conservation land and edged with a big pond. Many of the residents are raising their families here, or have raised their children and still live here.I attach a 15-second video taken at the entrance to the cul-de-sac. The video's a bit blurry: you can't see that Apple Hill Lane is etched into the rock!     Contact me to sell your hom...

High-priced Zip Codes have Low Inventories This is the story around the country, and here on the South Shore, it's also true.  Duxbury, where the average sale is over $600,000, is the only town in my service area of 13 towns where the number of sales is greater than the number of homes going on the market during the last few months.   Sellers seem to be thawing out a little, coming out of their deep freeze into a somewhat "warmer" market, but this month, June, is likely to be one of the busiest months for closed sales in Duxbury ever.  It's likely to be at least triple the number of sales in May.  That's drawing down the inventory to levels rarely seen here.   Wealthy ZIP Codes Starved for Mansions DAILY REAL ESTATE NEWS | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 2013 Housing inventory in wealthy ZIP codes ...

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society has created a blog chronicling Duxbury's soldiers' and civilians' experiences. Today's post, for June 14, begins: The second Union assault on Port Hudson, Louisiana took place 150 years ago today on June 14, 1863. It was, in hindsight, a hopeless and reckless assault for those Federal troops that attacked the forts and trenches outside one of the last Confederate strongholds on the Mississippi River. Among those Union troops were a significant number of Duxbury men. . . . Endangered Piping Plovers nest on Duxbury Beach - Beach closed to cars indefinitely 18 pairs of Piping Plovers have decided to make Duxbury Beach their home for the summer. Town government being what it is, the announcement that the birds' presence triggered state and Federal protection laws that are intended to limit human interaction with and damage to the Plovers and their habitat was handled in an inelegant, insensitive and blunderingly blunt fashion. Predictably, closing the beach for an indefinite time has created a human backlash of thunderstorm proportions. As the grandson of the woman who invented the Cape Cod National Seashore so that she, and all of us in her wake, could protect and enjoy birds, I am rather biased toward the birds' needs. Nevertheless, I do believe that a bit...

The Tree of Knowledge monument, at a road intersection in Duxbury, commemorates the post riders meeting place in our town. Below what's legible, it says, "Duxbury Tricentenary 1937".  That is, the monument was erected on the occasion of Duxbury's 300th birthday, now more than 75 years ago. Thomas Dowd, Photographer A lifelong resident of the South Shore, Thomas Dowd is a photographer who revels in the beauty of our smal corner of the planet. It shows in his vibrant, breathing portrayals of the landscape, whether his feet are on the ground or a thousand feet in the air. Remember dark rooms? Tom is glad that the days of developing his pictures in the darkness of a room filled with trays of chemicals is over. Now, like nearly every photographer, his vision, once it is captured on a digital canvas, takes shape in a photo editor. The results are spectacular. One of Tom's latest projects involves photographic collages of wet beach rocks. For the moment, you'll have to imagine the broad range and contrast of colors and textures that he has collected, arranged and photographed. W...
