Slidell, LA The town of Slidell was established on November 13, 1888, although Slidell's real beginning came with the railroad in 1881. Local railroad workers lived in the area and greatly contributed to its growth, development and local economy. The original town city limits were composed of 2,320 acres of L shaped land. The city of Slidell was named after John Slidell, a U.S. Senator and confederate officer. In 1889 the city's first jail and mayors office was constructed and by 1909 Slidell had its first graduating class of 4 seniors.
