It was apparent on Saturday afternoon that the Calcasieu Historical Preseration Society (CHPS) had invested a great deal of time and effort to prepare for their lastest quarterly meeting. The much anticipated Firewalk to commemorate the great fire of 1910 was held on Saturday at 4:00 immediately following an impressive ribbon cutting and dedication of the new courthouse plaza. Former President and preservationist Adley Cormier gave a brief history of the fire.  Then, the walk began, heading North on Ryan.  The turnout was such that the crowd was separated into two separate groups.  At each of the three stops along the walk, CHPS members provided a well-researched history that gave even more insight into the fire. Getting to this function was a bit tough due to a busy schedule, but I'm s...

When a major undertaking involving an untold amount of volunteers is planned, it is anybody's guess as to the outcome. A few weeks ago, I wrote a short blog "Congratulations (already) to the Clean Bayou Effort".  My pre-event congratulatory comments were proven accurate such that I can proudly say, " I told you so!" An awesome turnout of dedicated, hard-working volunteers resulted in a successful clean up of Contraband Bayou. The dynamics of yesterday's effort to rid Contraband Bayou of trash and debris are noteworthy and many, many deserving kudos should be provided. The CleanBayouSWLA.org website includes a page dedicated to the sponsors and donors and will certainly be full of more photos in the days to come.  The photos on this page were taken with my iPhone and the photo to the rig...

Historic 1880's Lake Charles Louisiana Churches Tell a Story Lake Charles Louisiana has its share of beautiful historic homes, many of which are located in the Charpentier District or Downtown Lake Charles. However there are many Churches in Downtown Lake Charles, Louisiana which are also historical landmarks of Lake Charles. The architecture of each building tells a story of the eras gone by.  Several of these buildings from the 1880's and 1900's are: First Methodist Church, Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Temple Sinai and First Presbyterian Church. One of my favorites which is near and dear to my heart, is First Presbyterian Church located at                     1801 2nd Avenue in the Oak Park neighborhood of Lake Charles. First Presbyterian Chu...

I have been a fan of Corporate Housing, Inc. for years. While I know and respect the owners and see them daily as we are in the same building, my appreciation for the service they provide is why I'm a fan. My relocation agents saved countless hours and became heroes to their customers in need of temporary housing services by introducing them to Corporate Housing. Corporate Housing is a locally based company that provides temporary housing services across the country.  Agents that specialize in relocation and relocation companies should get to know Corporate Housing, Inc.  You can learn more about them at CorporateHousingInc.com and/or their new Facebook fan page that was launched today.

Several months ago, the need for volunteers to step forward to help exercise the 4 Paws Society rescue dogs that are guests at the 4 Paws on the Bayou facility was identified.  Since 4 Paws on the Bayou is the pet boarding facility of choice for my Cajun Terrier, Jackson, I have walked a rescue dog here and there. My sporadic effort may have done some good, but much, much more was needed. Over cocktails at DeAngelos (best place in the Lake Area to synergize), the need was discussed. My DeAngelos friends were excited about ANYTHING that would take me away from the computer and MOVE. With 4 Paws President Wanda Williams and membership approval at Monday's meeting,  time to move on to IMPLEMENTATION. Since Jackie Matthews (wife of State Farm Insurance Agent, Scotty Matthews) had enthusiast...

It was wonderful to learn of a recent honor bestowed posthumously on Retired Brig. Gen. Leonard E. Pauley Sr. I always had a soft spot for this wonderful gentleman. He was the principal broker of the first company I was licensed with back in 1972. On Friday, he was inducted into the Louisiana National Guard’s Hall of Fame. The ceremony was at the civic center here in Lake Charles. His military accolades are numerous: Outstanding Battalion Commander Award European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Medal Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) Distinguished Service Medal Cross of Merit (posthumous) Emergency Service Medal Longevity Medal When I first signed on at The Pauley Agency, I had to learn of his military record and reputation by others. He was a straight-forward man who served hi...

Real Estate is About Making Friends for Life! A few months ago I worked with a young couple and SOLD them their First Home. They were actually a Referral from another couple which is a compliment every Realtor loves!  As First Time Homebuyers I guided Johnathon & Josie along the way in a rewarding transaction.  They were so excited when we closed on their dream home and they also just claimed their $8,000 First Time Homebuyer Credit! Tonight I got to witness another dream come true, in their lives when I attended their beautiful wedding!   I recently posted a Blog on Prien Lake Park. The setting is tranquil and this Park is truly a gift to residents of Calcasieu Parish.                   Josie & Johnathon had their wedding at Prien Lake Park in the Prien Pointe Amphithetre against a bac...

Volunteers become plumbers, painters, construction workers for a day. There are many other sponsors in Lake Charles who organize teams.  April 24 is National Rebuilding Together day across the country. The house we refurbished is the home of an 80 year old woman, Mrs. Chesson.  Her daughter lives with her in a small  2 bedroom 1 bath home in North Lake Charles.  Our team of volunteers did the following: re-roofed the carport with tin roofing, replaced  and painted rotten wood window frames, revamped the handicapped ramp, patched sheetroc...

Downtown Lake Charles, Louisiana, Sha Sha's of Creole is a delight! There is a new point of interest in Downtown Lake Charles that is sure to draw residents from the South side of town.  Sha Sha's of Creole is a new restaurant locally owned by Sherry Styron.   The name Sha Sha's was originally a restaurant in Creole, Louisiana (near Cameron) that was destroyed in the hurricane.  So "Creole" is now incorporated in the new name and is a now an asset to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Our downtown area has been revitalizing in North Lake Charles as new businesses are added along Ryan St. The corner of Ryan and Broad has been a local landmark for years. Several businesses can be found along downtown Ryan Street where you will find shopping, fitness and restaurants.  Sha Sha's of Creole is the newe...

Gators on the Geaux in Lake Charles, Louisiana When you think of Southwest Louisiana Alligators come to mind right? You thought I was going to show you real Gator's didn't you?? Several years ago the Lake Charles Symphony  created a fundraiser allowing businesses to purchase artistic Gators to place in front of their businesses. It was well received and the donations contributed to the support of the Symphony projects.  The Gator idea caught on and  soon became known as "Gators on the Geaux"  Businesses and organizations jumped on board and the creative themed Gators began to pop up all across the City of Lake Charles.  I decided to take advantage of the beautiful day, put the top down on the car and visit some of our special Gators around town.     Let me introduce you to "Clotile" who...

Having reported my outings last week where I ran into cows, birds, and turkeys, imagine my reaction when I saw THIS DUCK less than 300 feet from my office on Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive  in Lake Charles yesterday! If you go inside you can Adopt a Duck by purchasing tickets for the Adopt a Duck Race to be held at Prien Lake Park this Sunday. Learn more about the Adopt a Duck event and the wonderful Children's Miracle Network (CMN). Funds from the sale of the tickets go directly to the local CMN, so stop by the Foundation office (trust me, you can't miss it!) and support a tremendous cause by adopting your duck today. The local CMN effort in the Lake Area has always been an especially impressive organization, typical of the heart and soul of our area.
