Yes! I saw it with my own two eyes in Richmond, Kentucky! The annual Christmas parade came right down beautifully decorated Main Street last night and it was absolutely the best one yet! I was with a party of 5 that have moved here recently and they were amazed that there were hundreds of local Madison County residents packing the streets. The participants in the parade handed out kettle-corn, candy, balloons and souvenirs. Everywhere you looked there was a happy face. Included in the parade were decorated vehicles of all kinds like cement trucks, huge wreckers, floats, buses and police cars. Marching Bands were playing christmas music and children were screaming with excitement! I couldn't believe how long it lasted but it seemed for hours! Then right at the end of it all was Santa and...

I bet you thought I was going to write about Vampires since it is so close to Halloween! Actually, I was contacted the other day to be interviewed for a story that is to be used for Kentucky high school students to research different careers. A Realtor was one that had been voted on by teachers to learn more about. I was honored that they had picked me for an interview!So...I was invited to talk about the steps I took to become a Realtor in Central Kentucky. What classes or studies were involved, how long the classes were, things I might have studied in high school, what I enjoy about my career, etc. Seriously, I wish I had been pointed this direction earlier in my life. I was not pushed to become anything! My parents didn't see my brilliance in a certain area and seek extra training fo...

Don't get me wrong...I love my hometown. I was born in Madison County and I have lived half a century to see some major changes here. I am in the business of selling real estate. It would be rare to see a client buy farms just to see them stay as they are. Most always they are bought to subdivide for homes or build commercial buildings. I admit to the love of shopping and have been excited to see some better stores and restaurants move into Richmond Centre. I am sad to see the changes to our unique historic landscape that is green-space. My Dad had a vision back in the late 60's and bought some land (33 acres)with a few other businessmen on the White Hall exit. They wanted to build a hotel. Back then, that exit off I-75 was just a few houses with farmland, White Hall School, Horseshoe M...

Madison County Kentucky Time Capsule Where does time go??  This week I made a trip to the Madison County Court House to register my car and pick up tags. As I was walking on the sidewalk out front  I stepped on the Time Capsule! I had forgotten it was buried there. I can well remember the Madison County Bicentennial Celebration downtown along with a parade, games and booths all around the Court House in the summer of 1986. I will have to do a bit of research to find out what was put inside. Maybe it is a mystery to be discovered in 2086. I don't believe I will be around to see it opened.  That same year my Dad had some new concrete poured at our Greyhound Station that was a few blocks away on the corner of 3rd & Water Streets. I grew up downtown and loved it. We had owned the station s...

Normal Richmond, Kentucky day...showing some houses to my out of town clients. It's a nice family from Maryland and it's their first time here. I apologize about how cold it has become. Last week was in the 70's. They even ask me if it ever snows? Are there snakes?? Does it get humid in the summer?  By the third house it starts snowing...sideways...like a blinding snow storm!!! Can you believe it is REALLY coming down ! At one point the husband had to get out of the car to shake off a street sign just so we can see where to go! It was pretty funny! Hmmmmm...just where is Hunter Rd? He gets out his GPS to help out. I haven't bought one yet. We figure out we had turned on the right road but it should say Hunter Lane on the MLS. All this in a blinding April snow storm! One of my earlier blo...

We all have moments in our lives that define who we are. I read somewhere events that happen before you turn age 18 impact how you deal with your life in the future. This includes child abuse, divorce of parents, death of a family member, moving, bullying, good or bad teachers, accidents, etc. All these freaky things roll together and form who you are and how you live. April 4, 1974 was the night of the tornados in Madison County, Kentucky. Today is the anniversary. I was a senior in high school and my brother was in the Navy so I was thrilled that he had left me his car, a red Ford Pinto that I drove everywhere.   I remember the evening being fairly warm but windy. As I was traveling back home from Berea I thought the sky to the West was beautiful...sort of pink as the lightning would ...

A long time ago (in the late 60's) my Grandmother Elizabeth was visiting our farm at White Hall in Richmond, Kentucky. What a beautiful place that was! A beautiful old 2 story home with 2 staircases inside sitting in between numerous maple trees. We had  two barns for horses on 33 acres also. We had just moved in but Dad wanted to plant our garden so we would have veggies all summer. That was when I first heard of the "other seasons" we have here in Kentucky. She said we had 4 extra winters before summer would be here. I'm not quite sure of the order but I think they are: Redbud Winter, Dogwood Winter, Locust Winter and Blackberry Winter. Somehow winter shows up each time as each one blooms and hopefully it doesn't get cold enough to freeze. If we are lucky this year everything with the...
