Electric Pulses Zap Plaque in Arteries A technique to keep fatty plaque from blocking arteries again after doctors have used angioplasty to clear them has been developed by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Angioplasty is the "gold standard" of treatment for acute heart attacks, which often result after fatty plaque deposits on the walls of arteries rupture and block blood supply to the heart. In angioplasty, doctors insert a balloon into the blocked artery and inflated, thus reopening the artery and restoring blood flow. A coronary stent is then implanted to keep the artery open. Unfortunately, the procedure damages the artery wall and makes re-blockage more likely. The new technique, called irreversible electroporation (IRE), uses very short electric field pulses to d...

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer Marilynn Marchione, Ap Medical Writer - Mon Mar 30, 7:51 pm ET ORLANDO, Fla. - It's been a dream for a decade: a single daily pill combining aspirin, cholesterol medicine and blood pressure drugs - everything people need to prevent heart attacks and strokes in a cheap, generic form. Skeptics said five medicines rolled into a single pill would mean five times more side effects. Some people would get drugs they don't need, while others would get too little. One-size-fits-all would turn out to fit very few, they warned. Now the first big test of the "polypill" has proved them wrong. The experimental combo pill was as effective as nearly...

By Glenn Beck  FNC  America, I want to talk straight to you now. There is a lot of bad news out there. Our economy is tanking and does not show signs of improving. People are losing their jobs 500 million a month according to Nancy Pelosi and there are more cuts on the way. People around the world are taking to the streets. Our government responds to problem with "bailouts." When you reach out to them you get no response while Ponzi scheme crooks get away with millions and tax cheats get promotions. Terrorists are on the run, and you just want to keep your family safe. It is enough to make you want to just give up! But I am here to tell you something important: You are not alone, and if you believe in a majority of these nine principles then keep watching because I am going to prove it ...

She jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: 'How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?' The surgeon said, 'I'm sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn't make it.'Sally said, 'Why do little children get cancer? Doesn't God care anymore? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?' The surgeon asked, 'Would you like some    time  alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he's transported tothe university.' Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. 'Would you like a lock of his hair?' the nurse asked. Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy's hair, put it in a plastic bag and ha...

ByRobert A. Hall I'll be 63 soon. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce, and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired. I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth around" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy or stupid to earn it. I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes t...

You Would Never Have Guessed   Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76 , which is odd, because he always looked like he was 76. (DOB: 6/27/27 ) His death reminded me of the following  story.  Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside 3- and 4-star generals at  Arlington  National  Cemetery . His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else.  Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer:  I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.    In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often   in rear echelon posts where they...

For local banks Shielded from the worst of the chaos, they ride out the recession with confidence BY FLETCHER FARRAR   Central Illinois has seen a lag in new home construction, and some builders have gone out of business. But because builders here are relatively small and responsible, Springfield hasn't seen the amount of dislocation that is affecting the homebuilding industry elsewhere. As America looks around for someone to blame for the current economic mess, bankers are the easiest target in sight. "No one wants to hug a banker," reads a recent Newsweek headline, and no wonder. Bankers made the loans that went bad, causing the house of cards to tumble. Then they accepted government bailout money but spent it on their own salaries and parties, refusing to make new loans that would ge...

Mary Todd's sleeping cap, commode several of tour's surprises Shannon Kirshner/The State Journal-Register A chair with its original upholstery was recently acquired by the home and is only shown during Lincoln's birthday. The curator dubbed the piece the Q-bert chair due to its funky, multi-colored 3-D-like pattern. By PETE SHERMAN THE STATE JOURNAL-REGISTER   A handful of visitors to the Abraham Lincoln Home National Historic Site received a unique curatorial tour Wednesday, during which guides skipped the traditional story of the Lincoln household and highlighted its most authentic artifacts. "We used to steer away from that in favor of a more holistic experience," said Lincoln Home site curator Susan Haake. However, visitors recently began suggesting artifact tours of the home, so si...

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.                                                                                               The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath,   Because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and   They used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for   Removing hot pans from the oven.It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used   For cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, And sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big o...

........aims to make Springfield bicycle-friendly One proposal would link existing trails into a network BY AMANDA ROBERT   David Sykuta and his wife, Marcia, have ridden their bright yellow tandem recumbent bicycle all across the Midwest. They're not speed riders, he says - they just enjoy riding and exploring the beauty and charm of smaller towns. After several trips through Alton/Wood River and Edwardsville, two Metro-east Illinois areas that Sykuta says have expansive riding networks, he decided that Springfield needed help becoming more bicycle-friendly. Sykuta and others from the 300-member Springfield Bicycle Club formed a small committee that began meeting with city officials last fall. Their mission: to create a permanent Springfield Bicycle Advisory Council. "We decided betwee...
