Primarily in the 1960s and 1970s, many electrical contractors used aluminum wiring instead of copper wiring as a way to save money and lower construction costs. However, a number of electrical fires have been attributed to aluminum wiring. Many building codes have been rewritten to not allow the use of aluminum wire for branch circuit wiring in houses. Aluminum Wiring was used in the construction of roughly 1.5 million U.S. homes built between 1965 and 1973. According to a report published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), homes wired with aluminum wire manufactured before 1972 ("old technology" aluminum wire) are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach Fire Hazard Conditions than is a home wired with copper. It is that time of the year again, when the farm is bustling with life. Every year since I have lived in this little slice of paradise, the barn swallows show up in the spring. Not only do the show up, but they keep growing in numbers each year, making nest out in the horse barn.  Busy each day eating all of the flying insects, they are truly amazing beautiful birds.I just went out to the barn to give the horses a treat and I heard a little cry for help.  In one of the stalls a little baby barn swallow had fallen from the nest, built into the ceiling joist, and was on the stall floor crying for attention.  I quickly picked up the little guy before he got trampled and put him in a temporary box.  I noticed one of the nests had broken loose from one of the joist and had tipped.  I was goi...

This post is dedicated to all those city folks out there.  On 05/26/07 I awoke to find the birth of an a-maize-ing plant, commonly referred to as corn. This is an update as to the growth over the past 4 days and some additional information concerning this a-maize-ing plant.  We have had some great growing weather the first four days.  It has rained in the morning and sunny in the afternoon, which is perfect for the plants initial stages.  As you will see in the pictures the plant has more than quadrupled in size and the field is starting to turn all green.  As the corn continues to grow the less and less rain it will need because the plant likes it hot and dry. On November 29, 2006 the St. Louis area was paralyzed by an awesome breath taking ice storm, yet it was the creepiest freakiest night of my life.  It all started about 7:00pm when the temperature was just right above freezing and the rain began to fall.  The wind was howling at 30 to 40 mph and the temp was beginning to drop....fast; the rain turned to ice and began forming on everything especially the trees.   I live in the middle of approximately 450 acres of some of the most incredible land along the Mississippi river bluffs.  My home is surrounded by lots of trees, a 150 year old barn, horse stalls; all with metal roofs, lots of tillable farm land with huge woods and two lakes.Don't get me wrong, I love storms.  The incredible power of Mother Nature has always intrigued me, but this...
