The 5th Annual Hawaii Kai Dog walk, held June 7, was a great success, even more so because it marked the 1st Anniversary of the Dog Walk held in the now-permanent Hawaii Kai Dog Park.  This year's theme was "Off Leash & Lovin' It".  The registration fees support Hui 'Ilio and proceeds after expenses went to support of the maintenance of the Dog Park and other dog park groups on the island.  This year the city agreed to use part of the park for activities - booths and vendors - which contribute greatly to the fun atmosphere of the walk. The 2.3-mile course starts and ends at the Hawai'i Kai Park and Ride - site of the Hawaii Kai Dog Park. The Route extends along Keahole to Hawaii Kai Drive and then to Kalanianole Highway and back to the Park and Ride. The Hawai'i Kai Dog Park was develop...

You have perhaps heard about the ancient Chinese tradition of Feng Shui and you may even know that it is a philosophy applied to interior design and it's concepts are utilized by many Real Estate merchandisers and home stagers. But what you might not know is that Feng Shui is a philosophy of creating and optimizing environments to bring about happiness, abundance and harmony for it's inhabitants. This philosophy includes urban and city planning, personal and public architecture, interior and garden design, and the ultimate placement of objects in our personal environments.       Feng Shui is simply translated as "wind" and "water" used together the words represent harmony and balance. The ancient understanding is based on the flow of energy or "chi" through the universe and our everyda...

We'll it looks like trouble is brewing in other places beside our little piece of paradise we call the Beach Villas at Ko Olina. Trump Waikiki buyers sued Irongate yesterday within an hour of each other in two separate suits. The first suit states that buyers were misled into thinking that Donald Trump played a bigger roll in the development of the property when in fact, he was just leasing his name to the project. The press releases stated that he was co-developer. The second suit states that the buyers were misled regarding who would be managing the rental program and the rental units. Buyers are afraid that the litigation between Trump and Irongate regarding the Trump Baja debacle will spill over into the Trump Waikiki project. This could leave the property unbranded, creating just a...

All Loan Officers and Real Estate Agents in Hawaii were given a memo (it was released on May 19th) that Hawaii VA Loan Appraisals are taking longer now due to . The memo from the Head of VA Home Loans here on Oahu made sure to stress that on Oahu (Honolulu County) the VA Home Loan Appraisal are taking UP TO Five...yes, 5 weeks to complete. With Hawaii VA Home Loan Appraisals in Honolulu Country taking much longer than usual (based on the amount of home loans in progress) it is definitely placing a burden on all involved in the Real Estate Home Buying Process for the Veteran: Military Personnel who are transferring to Hawaii obviously stay in a hotel until they acquire housing.  An appraisal taking up to five weeks can delay the transaction from 30 days to 60 days or more.  Veterans who ...

Hawaii Home Buyers and Sellers | Etiquette for Open Houses Our Open Houses on Oahu (Honolulu County) are still a great way to preview a property. Maybe your Realtor®  is unable to attend with you (the Home Buyer) due to previous appointments or holding an Open House themselves. It's also a great way for the neighbor to do a ‘quiet observation' of the agent holding the Open House to see if they might possibly ‘hire' that agent and brokerage firm in the sale of their home. It's all relevant when it comes to Hawaii Open Houses and Honolulu Real Estate Tips. Make sure you've already been prequalified with a lender so you're looking in the correct price range. Be realistic in your home search and price range lest you waste your time.  If you have a Realtor® then you have already been instruc...

This year's liveable city ratings have been published by Monocle Magazine.  Honolulu ranks first in the United States!  Many Hawaii residents have known it for a long time, it's still nice to hear it from another source though! The top city worldwide was Zurich, Switzerland.  Honolulu is 11th worldwide. Monocle Magazine noted Honolulu has a "combination of big-city excitement and natural beauty." Here's a photo of the shoreline along Kahala and into Waialae.  Natural beauty is showing every day in Honolulu! If you're looking for your own piece of paradise in Honolulu or other ares in Hawaii, please contact me! Aloha, Mike Bates Oahu realtor

June 17th, 2009 categories: Honolulu House For Sale, Honolulu Real Estate 101 There is no substitute for a clean home and this is why number five of my ongoing series has to do with having the home cleaned. 5.  Hire a professional cleaner. I know that most people are more than capable of cleaning their home.  Many of you probably take great pride in the fact that you clean your house every week or two.  When it comes to selling a Honolulu home or condominium, I have found that most professional cleaners will provide a level of cleaning that will help your home sell for more money.  Because a cleaner will see things that you cannot, they will address issues that may have been seen by a buyer, thus eliminating negative details that might turn off a potential buyer. As the Hawaii pet shelters fill with unwanted dogs and cats because their owners can't afford the pet food, it seems timely to figure out how to cut expenses.  Cooking for your dog or cat isn't so unusual.  Many people make at least pet treats, even if they still use commercial main courses. Rick Woodford, of Portland, OR, taught himself pet nutrition when his best friend, Jackson, developed lymphoma and stopped eating.  After studying pet cookbooks, comparing ingredients to USDA nutrient charts, and reading veterinarians' reference books, he started cooking Jackson's food.  Jackson started eating, and neither has looked at commercial dog food in several years. In Hawaii, with transportation adding such a larger percentage to the cost of our food, saving even in small ways makes sense. ...
