How I Spent My Summer Vacation Real estate agents don’t like to leave town - something always happens when they do. In fact, my husband likes to say that I should leave more often since I always seem to get new business when I’m gone. But there is one get-away I never want to miss - visiting with good friends at their lake house in Lake Burton, Georgia. Yes, I never heard of it either until I went there. Lake Burton is the largest of several lakes that were originally the Tallulah River. The original town of Burton is now buried underwater. Our friends lived in Atlanta for many years and Lake Burton (nearest town is Clayton) is a popular vacation spot for the well-to-do in Atlanta. Homes on Lake Burton are not that different from homes in Winnetka or the North Shore - magnificent and pr...

Last Thanksgiving, I wrote about my old friend, Mr. Ed, an 88 year old World War II veteran who had just celebrated what we felt was his last Thanksgiving.  His poor old body was worn out, but his mind was still good enough to give thanks for Christmas and to celebrate the arrival of the new year. But, a couple of weeks ago, that tired body gave up the fight and Mr. Ed left us early in the morning. His funeral was held on Wednesday morning in Gallatin, Tennessee.  Visitation was the previous afternoon and hundreds of his friends and the residents of Gallatin who had known him and his family for 80 years gathered to pay their respects.  His three children were there and most of their children were there, too.  Everyone who could come dropped by to pay their respects.  It was as it should ...

It has been over a year since the last time I was able to help negotiate a purchase and sale.  Our local market is largely a secondary home market and my focus is not only secondary homes, but luxury secondary homes....sounded like a great idea three years ago when I opened my new company here in the beautiful north Georgia mountain lakes region!  LOL Things went very well for the first 18 months ...then, nothing...nada.  Not that I would wish no sales on anyone else, but it was the entire area...not just me.   Ever optimistic, I had a feeling there were buyers who were sophisticated enough to realize the beginning of the end of the downward spiral and that we might see some offers soon.  Happily and gratefully, I am able to report to all of my Active Rain friends and colleagues that th...

Wondering what is going on in Rabun County and what there is to do in the mountains of North East Georgia this late August and September? Here are some dates and events to write on your calendar.   Lake Rabun Hotel and Restaurant was recently listed on the National Geographic Traveler Magazine's Top Stay List 2009.   ( If you haven't had dinner at their restaurant, you have missed a prime dining experience.  The food is amazing!!) Lazy Bear Furniture (rustic and cottage furniture, accessories, lamps, and art) in Dillard now has a wine tasting room and is offering free wine tastings. They serve and sell wine only from The Georgia Winery, the oldest winery in the state of Georgia. For additional information, call 706-746-2168.   Persimmon Creek Vineyards recently had a birth of a new lamb...

Some of my all time fondest memories are family times spent on Lake Burton.  This lake is truly my personal favorite.  The only word that adequately describes Lake Burton for me is "magical".  If you have ever been on this lake, you know what I mean; you can just feel the magic, it's always there no matter how many years go by.  I was very blessed to be able to spend summers and holiday breaks with my family at my grandparent's cabin in Murray Cove.  My great grandfather helped build the Lake Burton Dam. Today, there are stunning multi million dollar homes on this lake which have mostly replaced the old, rustic, modest cabins of the past.  The magic is still there though. Personally, I'll take my grandparent's old rustic cabin anyday but it's no longer there.  That old cabin was part ...

Are you out there hoping to find that steal on a property?  If so here are some helpful tips that might save you some frustration. 1.  You need to know the area well enough to make a quick decision. 2.  Keep a real estate agent as your guide to keep you informed about new listings, and     foreclosures in the area. 3.  Already have a name of your home inspector, terminate inspector, and maybe the contractor     that you want doing any work.(Real estate agents also keep a list of these types of people.) 4.  If you need financing go ahead to the bank first.  Then you know what you can get and     when dealing with some properties( HUD for EX.)  they want a letter of approval from the bank sent in     with your offer. 5.  If you are looking to make an offer on a bank owned property you mus...

I am blessed to be in a unique market.  Most markets it's about getting in the right area for work or school or to be near family.  Most of the time when people buy in Rabun County it's because they WANT to be here not because they have to be here.   There is more oppourtunity  to really let customers find what they have always been dreaming about.  Maybe  it's the cabin in the woods or the mansion with the big view.  Here they are allowed to explore all of our surrounding areas.  I service, Clayton, Lakemont, Tiger, Mountain City, Rabun Gap, Dillard and more of the surrounding counties.   For that reason it sometimes takes a lot more work in order to find that perfect home or land.  You cannot just go to the neighborhood of your choice.  Although Rabun is 70% National Forest there is ...

It's time to make a plan about where your family will view the 4th of July fireworks in Rabun County.  There are several good choices - in a boat on Lake Burton or Lake Rabun, on the grassy lawn in front of the Rabun Gap-Nachoochee School campus are three of the best. The fireworks in Rabun Gap are shot from the Dillard House property and can be seen from a 1/2 mile long stretch of Highway 441.  Parking is allowed on the sides of the road, but get there early to get a good parking space up front.  Or, take a blanket and a picnic basket and have a 4th of July dinner while waiting for darkness to fall and the fireworks show to begin.  It is entertaining watching the families who gather on the campus lawn.  Little children tumble and twirl holding sparklers and chasing fireflies.  It's qui...

Our local Rabun County Board of Realtors just passed a vote to change to Georgia MLS. Till now we have had or own local system.  The thought was only we could list the properties in our county in the MLS system so listing with a local agent was the only sensible solution for a seller. We thought it a little irresponsible for an agent from another area to list because the local agents would not see it on our MLS system.  Of course, I still believe it makes more sense to list with an agent that lives in the area of your property for sale, but sellers do have a choice. It will be interesting to see how this plays out but it could open the market both ways in a positive manner. When the market saw a slow down we saw more traffic from out of town agents bringing in customers to show property...

Trout fishing in the streams and rivers of Northeast Georgia is an experience everyone should have.  There is nothing like standing in a cold mountain stream and taking time to enjoy the sound of the cascading water as it tumbles through boulders, around fallen trees and around sharp bends on its way into one of our sparkling mountain lakes. While purists fly fish, I am happy using my old reliable rod and reel.  Pockets full of meal worms, wax worms or giant red wigglers (and yes, sometimes I stoop to using a kernel of corn) I venture forth well armed in an attempt to attract the wily trout. While native brown and brook trout can still be found occassionally and if one has an idea of where to look, these waterways are stocked by the local hatchery which is located on the shores of Lake ...

The sun is shining. The sky is blue. We're in the mountains. Wish you were here, too! Seriously, this is a great weekend to hop in the car and ride up to Georgia's Mountain Lakes.  The leaves aren't yet on the trees and you can see forever! If you would like to ride through and see Waterfall at Lake Burton - let me know.  I'll be here all weekend. Take 985 toward Gainesville and keep on coming to Clayton. Take a left onto Ga Highway 76 and head west for 10 miles.  You'll cross over a bridge over Lake Burton and then Waterfall will be on your right. Hope to see you!

Spring Comes To The Mountains of NE Georgia My first spring spent in Rabun County was heralded with the blooming of one tree in particular that I'd never seen before.  Covered in small white blossoms, the trees were obviously native because they were sprinkled all over the faces of the mountains.  Since no other trees yet had any leaves and nothing else was yet blooming, I began to ask my newly made acquaintances about the tree. The first lady I asked told me it was a wild plum.  Now, I've seen wild plums before and know that they tend to be more bushy, but I thanked her and went on my way. The next fellow told me that trees covered in white blossoms were dogwoods.  Now, I definitely knew better than that.  Having lived in the south all my life, not only do I know a dogwood when it is bl...
