The mountains of Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina have a beautiful array of native birds and, I am happy to say, many call our yard their home.  While I hate to admit I could waste hours just sitting and watching their antics, you will find numerous feeders around the yard and hanging from the porches and decks.   We have lots of Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chicadee and White-Breasted Nuthatch year-round.  Recently the feeders have been overwhelmed with the arrival of the Cassin’s Finch, American Goldfinch  and House Finch.  We have several very shy Red-Bellied Woodpeckers and Downy Woodpeckers as well as Cardinals and an occasional Eastern Bluebird.  We put corn out for the deer in the back yard and have attracted quite a flock of Blue Jays!   The mountains of Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina are under a Winter Weather Advisory this evening.   Now, I know those of you up north are totally laughing at us BUT, believe it or not, an inch of snow can shut us down totally!! We started off early this morning with heavy rains and high winds which continued throughout most of the day.  We even had a crazy period around 5:30 this evening with heavy lightning.   I was sitting in my office looking out the window and suddenly the sun appeared but only in a spot!  One side of the mountain was dark and dreary and the other side was sunny and bright.   Needless to say I couldn’t resist snapping a couple of pictures.   Hope you enjoy! For the mountains of Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina, this first day of March has been cold, wet and blustery.  As the day has faded to night, we are now under a winter weather advisory and the snow has started to fall!  We are actually expecting 1-3 inches of snow overnight. Ok, all our friends north of the Mason-Dixon line can stop rolling on the floor laughing now. Really.  An inch here in the mountains is not pretty.  Well, the SNOW is pretty but the resulting road problems certainly aren’t.   All day long I’ve been thinking “in like a lion, out like a lamb”.  But then I started wondering where that saying came from.  According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the saying came from the people of ancient civilizations who believe that spirits determined the outcome of the weathe... 03/01/2013

Seriously!  We all want to save time and money, right?  I stumbled upon a sure-fire way to do just that.  How you ask?  Simple - here’s how: We moved last summer about 25 miles from the closest WalMart so I decided to try shopping once a month instead of each weekend. Getting a month’s supply of the items we use/need all the time such as pet food, coffee, tea, rice, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.  You get the idea!  I loved having the extra time each month.  But wait, it get’s better!! Lake Chatuge waterfront lot sells are down from a year ago. Through this time a year ago 6 had been sold compared to only 3 this year. That said, average list and sold prices are up this year. Last year the average list price was $244,000 compared to $255,967 this year. The average sold price is up from $204,983 a year ago to $251,000 this year. Even the days on market has improved. Last year the average days on market was 278 compared to 264 this year. The sold to list price was 84.01% last year compared to 98.06% this year. It would appear that now is the time to buy a waterfront lot on Lake Chatuge. 09/16/2012

Lake Chatuge homes sells are only down by one from this time a year ago. Prices have fallen over the last year also. The average list price was $464,581 last year and $410,387 this year. The average sold price this year is $368,100 down from $410,738 a year ago. The sold to list price is 89.7% thia year compared to 88.41% last year. Last year's highest sold price on the lake was $800,000 compared to $700,000 this year. If you ever planned to buy on Lake Chatuge now is definately the time.  09/16/2012

One of the great things about the mountains this time of year is the outside dining.  If you are wanting great food and a great view, the Chophouse of Hiawassee does not disappoint.  The restaurant is located up on a hill overlooking Lake Chatuge as you enter Hiawassee from the west.  The Chophouse offers a variety of menu options.  It is our favorite place to go for seafood.  James Reaux, the owner, is no beginner when it comes to preparing exquisite seafood platters.James has had years of successful chef experience in Hawaii, California and Florida.  From the menu, one can select from Grouper "Francaise", Trout Meuniere, seared tuna or the Chophouse's famous lump crap cakes.  We always like to start our meal with an appetizer!  Crispy portobello mushroom fries and mozzarella lollipops... 08/26/2012

Lake Lanier Resort One of the benefits of living in the beautiful mountains of Northeast Georgia/ Western North Carolina is being within 2 hours of Atlanta GA, Asheville NC and Chatanooga TN. Liz Green and her family own the vineyard. They offer a varied selection of blended wines made from cabernet franc, viognier, vignoles, pinot grigio, merlot and catawba grapes.
