Ybor City is a historic neighborhood just east of Tampa Florida. It was founded in 1886 by Vicente Martinez Ybor, a prominent Spanish-born cigar manufacturer and in its peak had 200 cigar factories and rolled 700 million cigars per year. The residents were from Cuba, Italy and Spain making this a very diverse city. Many of the old buildings are still there and there has been an effort to revitalize the community. There are many little shops lining 7th Avenue and at night there are many night clubs to choose from. On Saturdays there are vendors in the park with live entertainment, you never know what you will find that you just can't live without. The Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City has so many delicious things to offer that when we were there last Sunday everybody had something different. And being a compulsive blogger, you KNOW I had my camera ready and had to take photos BEFORE anyone could even look twice at their meal!!! My daughter had the grilled chicken on Cuban bread with plantain chips! Gotta have that next time!   Sascha, my son, had their famous chicken and yellow rice! This has always been something he loves! When we lived in Europe my mother used to send me bags of Vigo Yellow Rice Mix just for Sascha!!! I had the mahi-mahi with yellow rice and fried plantain! It was out of this world!!!!! Ybor City's Columbia Restaurantis a great place to go anytime of day! The food is fantastic - authentic Spanish cuisine in a magnificent setting! A great place to celebrate ANY special occasion and what could possibly be a better place to go when my son is in town from DC??? Established in 1905, the restaurant has grown by leaps and bounds but is still owned by the same family! What started out as a small corner cafe for the cigar workers to get a cheap lunch has turned into one of the best known places in the Tampa Bay area! GUAVAWEEN is the annual Latin style Halloween Festival that is held in Tampa's Ybor City the last Saturday of October! It seems years ago attempts were made to make this area known as the Big Guava, much like NYC is known as the Big Apple. Anyway, unsuccessful attempts were made at growing guavas commercially here but it never took off. But the Guava name lingered - hence Guavaween! Festivities are always in Tampa's Latin Quarter: YBOR CITY This year's merrymaking will begin in the morning hours of around 10 am, with events for the entire family!
