Storm Clouds over Hernando Beach, Florida Not unsual for a summer or early fall night in Florida, there is thunder rolling in the distance and the storm clouds are piling up over the Hernando Beach sky this evening.   Tonight it's an eery sight, the setting sun not visible behind layers and layers of storm clouds is turning the remaining daylight a strange yellow twilight this evening only to fall dark shortly soon after.

Florida Waterfront Living: Evening in Hernando Beach, Florida After a few hot summer days, we had some heavy thunderstorms moving through Hernando Beach earlier today.  After unleashing rain, lighting and thunder, nature seemed to relent and rewarded us with one very spectacular sunset.  Take a look how the sky over Hernando Beach turned bright orange as the sun dipped into the Gulf of Mexico.     Florida Waterfront Living:  Evening in Hernando Beach, Florida

A Barracuda in Hernando Beach? 12 Inch Baby Barracuda in the Canal off of Lily Dr in Hernando Beach Florida 34607. While I was doing a weekly inspection for one of my vacant waterfront listings on Lily Dr, I a came across a baby 12 inch Barracuda sunning by the sea wall. This is the first Barracuda I have ever seen in the Hernando Beach canal system and the second Barracuda I have ever seen in shallow water in the region. The only other Baracuda I saw was over 10 years ago at the end of my fishing line in 2 foot of water just north of Bayport where the Weeki Wachee River meets the Gulf of Mexico.   How Much is My Home Worth? Happy Independence Day! With all that is being said about Independence Day and Fourth of July celebrations, here is a quote by the great American columnist, Erma Bombeck, who I think said it best:   "You have to love a nation that celebrates its Independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism." Erma Bombeck  (1927-1996) Hope you will enjoy a Happy Fourth of July!

Waterfront Living:  You know what a Reef is... but what is a Reef Ball? Whether you live near water or not, you know what a reef is.  Simply stated, it is something that lies below the water surface, that has formed either naturally or artificially and may become a habitat for various life forms living in the water. But what is a reef ball? A reef ball is an artificially created object that has been put in the water to create just such a habitat.  If you enjoy diving or snorkeling, you may have already seen one of these objects.  If you have never seen a reef ball, below is photo of an example that can be seen at the entrance of Jenkins Creek Park in Hernando Beach Florida.  I have to admit, I have always wondered what this curious looking thing is and what it is for.  So what use is a ...

Birdwatching on Florida's Nature Coast:  Dockside Observation  Waterfront living brings quite a variety of water birds to backyards and canals. While taking photos for one of my Hernando Beach waterfront homes for sale, I noticed this Yellow-crowned Night-Heron landing on the floating dock that belongs to the house.  The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is an all year resident of Florida.  This particular one is male in breeding plumage.  His long crown feathers are resting on his back as he was watching me watching him! Working as a waterfront Realtor and working with waterfront homes in Hernando Beach, Florida has its special rewards especially if you enjoy Florida nature and birdwatching as I do.

Birdwatching on Florida's Nature Coast:  Cold Weather triggers Feeding Frenzy Waterfront living brings quite a variety of water birds to backyards and canals.  This winter has been unusually cold in Hernando Beach and the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico and the canals has dropped.   The first thing I do in the morning is to look outside.  For several weeks I've noticed literally dozens of Cormorants swimming, diving, and feeding in the saltwater canal behind our house.  Pelicans and Great Blue Herons usually are also nearby looking out for scraps. Apparently, the cold water is affecting the fish by slowing down their movements and the birds take advantage of this to catch an easy meal.  Normally, these birds fly off quickly when feeling disturbed; however, this morning I was luc...
