Honeymoon Island has Sea Grapes everywhere! Sea Grapes grow here in Florida and throughout the Carribean. They have beautiful flowers that look like this: The grapes can be made into jam or eatten raw, just like regular grapes. Sea Grapes need a lot of salt to survive. That is way you find them all over the islands here in Florida!!!! They cannot live through frost. Sea Grapes are found all along the coastline in South Florida. Caladesi Island's beautiful white sands are why "Dr. Beach" Stephen P. Leatherman named it the top beach in the nation for 2008! Leatherman called the three mile long island his 'favorite getaway beach'. With it's crystal clear waters, Caladesi Island - which is located directly off the coast of Dunedin, Florida - is indeed a wonderful place to play in the Florida Sun!!!! You can get to Caladesi Island via ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park, which is at the end of the Dunedin Causeway!!! #2 on his list for this year is Hawaii's Hanalei Beach! It s family owned and operated and you can tell because of the quality of the beer!!! Dunedin Florida's Purple Moon is more than just a cafe under the trees! It is a wonderful eclectic shop that has cards, crystals, books, candles, incense, drawings to decorate your walls, bumper stickers, jewelery and many more items just waiting for you to discover them!!! You can sit outside under the trees and enjoy a nice glass of wine or cup of coffee with something sweet while you listen to the music coming from the park which is just across the street! Beautiful downtown Dunedin Florida comes complete with a beautiful park and a stage for music in the park!!! Notice those little holes in the roof area???? They are filled with bird nests! So while you are enjoying the afternoon in the park you have music whether the band is playing or not!!! Dunedin is a wonderful place to live! It is right on the coast, has it's own beach on Honeymoon Island and the Dunedin Causeway leading out to the island! This wonderful community has adorable little shops for browsing. I wanted to share some of these photos of Dunedin that I took this past weekend! Lately I have been working so much that I have not gotten out to just enjoy a day between the park and the local shops. This past weekend was an exception. I went to Dunedin and had a wonderful time! The side of this building pretty much says it all! Located directly on the Gulf of Mexico, Dunedin is a quaint town just minutes from Clearwater and fantastic Clearwater Beach! The downtown area has brick everywhere and those classic older homes that many have turned into shops and restaurants! Dunedin is beautiful !!!!! The downtown area of Dunedin is lined with an eclectic combination of shops and restaurants. As you enter the downtown area you are greeted with signage welcoming you. Caladesi Island is located just off the coast of Honeymoon Island. As a matter of fact, there is a ferry that takes you to Caladesi Island and it leaves from Honeymoon Island State Park, which is connected to the mainland via the Dunedin Causeway.Ferries begin running at 8am and continue until Sunset. The price is $9. for adults and $5.50 for children ages 4-12. You can take a cooler with your lunch along with you and don't forget PLENTY of sunscreen for a wonderful day on this fantastic island in the Gulf of Mexico.There are showers and bathrooms out on the island as well as a small store that sells cool drinks. Honeymoon Island has undertaken a wonderful restoration project! The park service has planted sea grasses which are now marked off so people let them grow. Once these grasses have reached maturity, they will protect the island and offer shelter to more birds. The island is also regularly patrolled by the park rangers in their 4 wheel drive vehicles and by the air patrol. Honeymoon Island - Paradise in Pinellas - this series could not be complete without the typical vacation photo of some of the seashells, a piece of sponge that washed up and a horseshoe crab! A tourist had collected these and I wanted to share! For those who enjoy fishing, you can also fish from the shore for snook, redfish, snapper and other saltwater fish! Honeymoon Island - Paradise in Pinellas - it wasn't always that way. In 1880 it was called Hog Island because (you guessed it) there was a hog farm out on the island! Today there are beautiful indigenous plants, like these sea grapes, growing on the island. The park is also home to nesting sea birds and sea turtles, both of which are protected by the park service! Honeymoon Island is indeed Paradise in Pinellas County! I remember going out there by boat with my folks in the 50's and 60's. There was no causeway back then, so there were no cars! It was great! Just you and the island inhabitants, which included various forms of marine life and a large assortment of birds! During my high school days they built the causeway and suddenly everyone knew where Honeymoon Island was. This tropical paradise off the coast of Dunedin has since become one of our most beautiful state parks! Recently the park service updated all of the beach facilities which include showers and full bathroom facilities as well as one building that sells refreshments.
