SpaceX has launched two military missions so far, and tonight they are making it a hat trick. This will be the 17th launch for SpaceX in 2017 which doubles the number of launches for Elon Musks company in any previous year. Tonight SpaceX is planning to launch its most secretive Payload so far for the US Military. The Zuma launch as it's known, was not even made public until a month ago. Developed by Northrup Grumman it was given the mission patch shown...  Zuma's payload is being launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for the National Reconnaissance Office and is headed for a low-Earth orbit. No more information has been made public.The launch window opens at 8:00pm tonight and will remain open for 2 hours. If the launch is delayed, then Friday at 8:00pm is the alternative launch time. An ORS-5 satellite for the US Air Force is set to be launched from Cape Canaveral aboard an Orbital ATK Minotaur IV rocket. The launch window opens at 11:15pm on Friday evening and extends through Saturday morning at 3:15am. So if everything happens in a timely fashion, then liftoff would be Friday evening. If there are delays, liftoff could be early Saturday morning. I don't think I will stay up waiting for the fiery proof in the night sky. The SpaceX Dragon capsule that launched from the Space Coast on Sunday  carrying nearly 5,500 pounds of supplies to the ISS docked this morning which was 1 day later than originally planned. A 58-foot robotic arm to was used to connect with the capsule 250 miles above the Earth. The resupply mission carried over 5500 lbs of  supplies to the 6 people that are presently on board the ISS. 02/23/2017

I blogged last week that there was a SpaceX launch on Saturday. Due to technical problems, that launch was postponed until Sunday. The launch from Kennedy Space Center launch pad 39A was difficult to see due to low cloud cover, but, this particular launch was important. Launch pad 39A is significant because the last time it was used was for the last space shuttle launch.Sunday's launch marked the first time that a SpaceX Rocket landed on solid ground. Previously they had landed on a platform out in the ocean, but 8 minutes after the launch this one landed on Terra Firma, creating a massive sonic boom in the process. “Baby came back,” CEO Elon Musk posted on Instagram. I've said it before and I will say it again, Elon Musk is a visionary! 02/20/2017

Many people have asked me why NASA launches from Cape Canaveral when Florida has so many hurricanes. Fair question. I decided to look into it and came up with some interesting answers.First off yes, Florida does have hurricanes, however, because of the way that the Gulf Stream flows, usually hurricanes don't make a direct hit on Brevard county where Cape Canaveral is located. As you can see from the illustration to the right, the Gulf Stream generally rounds the tip of south Florida in the Miami area and then heads out into the ocean and up the eastern sea board where it often is felt in the Carolinas.Next, Cape Canaveral is on the Atlantic coast of Florida.
