170 Years of Florida Statehood!  Happy Anniversary!   On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th state of the Union so this month we are celebrating 170 years of Statehood in Florida.  Tallahassee had already been designated as the capital of the territory of Florida but becoming a state meant that Florida had to have a capitol building and in 1845, just before entering the Union, construction on Florida's first Capitol building was completed.      Notice the beautiful stone carvings depicting the discovery of Florida by Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon.       At the time, the Capitol building housed all three branches of government under one roof.  The governor's office (executive branch), the legislative branch (house and senate), and the judicial branch represented by Florida's Supreme ...

Wordless Wednesday:  Bizarre Foods in Florida   Those of you who are familiar with Andrew Zimmern's show "Bizarre Foods" know that people around the world indeed eat  - well - bizarre foods!  Normally however, we associate these food items with strange and far away places.   The more surprised I was when I spotted this sign in the window of a well known fast food chain right here in Florida.  Proof of Bizarre Foods - right here at home!  No!  I didn't try it!     Wordless Wednesday: Bizarre Foods in Florida

Friday Foto:  Taste of Spring   As most of the USA is in the grip of winter, even here in Florida, we feel the cold.  In our area in Hernando County, temperatures went down to freezing last night and as the day has progressed haven't reached 50s yet although we are enjoying a beautiful sunny day.  I took this photo with the flowering bush against some farmland last weekend while driving around in our area and thought I would share with you just a little taste of Spring!   Hernando County, Florida is located along the Gulf Coast of Florida, in an area that is also known as the Nature Coast.  This picture certainly shows why it's gotten that name!   And yes, our "cold spells" usually don't last that long.  This weekend we will be back in the 70s! Enjoy!

Friday Foto: A Florida Moment   Showing homes this week to a buyer who is looking for a Spring Hill home with land took me to some properties with beautiful grounds.   At one of these properties, I noticed a very large Camellia shrub, almost like a small tree, and that was covered in blooms.  Surrounded by old pines and other trees, pine needles and small air plants had nestled among its branches, creating a natural arrangement around the flowers.  Camellias are just one of the beautiful flowers we get to enjoy even in January here in Florida.  Hope you are enjoying these as much as I did.    Friday Foto:  A Florida Moment
