No, we are not all nuts in Delaware. Just a few of us willing to aspire to the highest level of license plate snobbery! Over the weekend, an auction was held in Rehoboth Beach for inherited low digit automobile license plate numbers. Delaware may be the last state to still recycle all its vehicle license numbers going back to 1909. (We are so small that there is no chance of numbers going over 999,999). These old tin beauties are black with white numbers. Fifty years ago, blue plates with yellow numbers (once called the nation’s ugliest) replaced the black and white ones, but through some quirk in the law, the b & w ones can be replaced. Okay, I know you are curious for the details of this fantasy. Tag number 14 sold for $325,000. Other low digit numbers are reserved: 1, 2, and 3 are fo...

The 23rd Annual Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival happens March 2 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. It’s not only a day for chocolate lovers to gather. It’s a day of fun for the whole family, so local businesses are cooking up some sweet specials, including restaurants and spas offering chocolate-themed specials. Starting Friday night, restaurants such as Victoria’s, Cabo Modern Mexican Tequila Bar, Salt Air, Blue Moon, Eden, Planet X, Lupo di Mare, Hobo’s and Dos Locos will be cooking up special menu items and desserts. Chef Jay Caputo at Espuma will offer a three-course chocolate menu paired with wines for $45, as well as some featured chocolate desserts. If your sweet tooth goes beyond chocolate, Kilwin’s Rehoboth Avenue offers one scoop of ice cream with a second for free. ...

Many times real estate market experts point to the feelings of the nation's home builders as a bell-weather signalling the health of the housing sector. This month's reading indicates that home builders are feeling pretty good. The National Association of Home Builders / Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) for February changed by one point to 46 as compared to 47 for January's reading. Over the last four months, HMI readings have stayed within a three-point range between 45 and 47, indicating a plateau after rising from 25 to 45 in 2012. Housing Market Index Near Highest Levels Since 2006 The good news is that February's reading remains near the HMI's highest level since April 2006, when the HMI reading reached 51. Some builders may be taking a wait-and-see stance in their confidenc...

Who doesn’t want to know what will happen in the future? That’s a very small group, for sure, since good planning is a cornerstone of good management — for households as well as for organizations of every kind. So, whenever Coastal Delaware homeowners see headlines like “Home Prices Up ‘Unsustainable’ 5.9% in 2012,” above  a MarketWatch article that explains that price growth is expected to slow, they probably would like to gauge the reliability of the forecasters. In this case, MarketWatch is part of the relatively stalwart Wall Street Journal, so credibility goes up. But closer examination finds that the author is just reporting information real estate site Zillow compiled. Zillow is indeed an internet behemoth — but can local homeowners rely on its national predictions to gauge Rehob...

“Mansion” is the Wall Street Journal’s entry into the high-end real estate magazine world. Well, not quite a magazine — it’s an extra section they run on Fridays. It’s a nice diversion for those who want to read about really rich people selling their properties. More than that, it could actually be an important source of information if you decide to buy a vineyard in the middle of Los Angeles (Bel-Air, actually — that one was featured two weeks ago).  It was another article that caught my eye on that Friday, though; one that dealt with a topic we agents have long debated. The article was headlined “THE BEST DAY TO LIST A HOME IS…”.  It summarized an elaborately executed study by a national brokerage revealing hard statistics on which day of the week is best for launching your Rehoboth B...

Paying off the mortgage on your Coastal Delaware home faster not only means that you’ll be able to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with completely owning your property earlier, but you may also save thousands of dollars in interest payments. Below are seven clever tips to help you get your mortgage payments on the fast track. 1. Save for a large down payment Pay as large a down payment as you can reasonably afford. The more you can put down, then the less you’ll have to borrow from the bank. 2. Read the fine print When you are choosing a mortgage, look at the fine print to find out if any restrictions apply to paying early. Some lenders will charge you for making extra or early payments. 3. Prepay early in the life of the mortgage This is when the loan is the most interest-heavy. In...

Buying Rehoboth Beach real estate doesn't just give you a place to live; it can also be a very smart financial move. This is because owning a home can be like having a forced savings account, which you are committed to for the long term. Consistent Saving On Autopilot Sometimes saving money on our own each month is difficult. It takes a lot of discipline to maintain a consistent savings plan. However, paying your mortgage every month means that you are paying down the principal and working toward eventually owning the property outright. In the early years of the mortgage, the payments will go primarily to the interest on the loan. But over time, the portion of your payment dedicated to principle increases, which accelerates paying off the entire mortgage. Make Yourself Wealthy Instead O...

The Band Stand in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. A swing band performed at the Band Stand in Rehobth Beach tonight. There were only six people in the group but they really put out a lot of great sound. The boardwalk and beach were quite busy tonight. A electric transformer blew out in the early evening so a lot of businesses weren't able to conduct business for several hours. Beach goers didn't seem to mind though. They were walking along in groups and pairs, laughing and carrying on conversations. The concerts at the band stand are free and have acts performing quite a few nights throughout the summer. Here bis the schedule: June 24 - Paul Cullen June 29 - Jesse Garron June 30 - Separate Ways the Band July 1 - US Army Downrange July 4 - US Navy Cruisers (before fireworks) and The Funsters (...

We love the beach! If you are from Philly like us, you may call it "the shore". But no matter where you come from and what you call it, your special getaway place is something so special and so personal to you, it can uplift and transform you just by thinking about it. Am I right? Sometimes we forget just how simple and possible it is to just take a "life's a beach" attitude every day. This week's tip jar is dedicated to the man who reminded us how easy, important, and possible it is to to take a "life's a beach" attitude. Thank you David from Kaya Yoga in Rehoboth. We hope to see you again soon...on the beach!

Chocoholic Heaven At long last, it’s time for the Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival, which goes down March 3 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. Show up to taste the entries, or take the bold step of entering your own creation in the Chocolate Baking Contest, There are categories for chocolate makers of all abilities, from kids to amateur to pro, as well as sub-categories such as cookies, cakes, brownies and more. Anything goes, which means if you think you make the best fudge on earth, you should be here. Or go to sample offerings from local places such as Cake Break, Snyder’s Candy, The Coffee Mill, Stringray and Touch of Italy.
