A little bit of friendly hospitality can go a long way, particularly when tequila is involved. I’ll always remember an otherwise routine trip to pick up a takeout order from Rasa Sayang, the excellent Malaysian eatery in North Wilmington's Independence Mall. As I waited for my order, I took a seat at the bar and noticed a tank of pineapple chunks bobbing in a vat of clear liquid. A nearby staffer caught me staring. “It’s Patron,” he said. Try it. This was server/manager Patrick Wang, who was now lifting a tab at the bottom of the container to release a stream of pineapple-infused tequila into a shot glass. Then he pried open the top, scooped out a sizable hunk of fruit and plopped it into the glass. Bottoms up. It wasn't an earth-shattering moment, but a friendly and fun gesture from a ...

Be sure to meet this year's General Election Candidates before the vote on November 2! With the election less than three weeks away, now is an excellent time to take the chance to get out and meet the candidates.  In Delaware, we have the unique advantage of being a small state in which we actually do have the chance to see, meet, and talk to most of our candidates up close and personally. Locally, in addition to the candidate forums, fundraisers, and debates, two candidates are holding coffees.  Fred Cullis is holding a Saturday morning coffee every Saturday at his campaign headquarters in Elsmere from 8:00-10:00.  Greg Lavelle has been holding coffees every first and third Tuesday morning at in Fairfax for several years.  There are still chances to meet both candidates before the elec...

The Hanlin Chinese Culture Association is bringing the 2010 Taiwan Film Festival to the Hockessin Library. The festival, which opened May 16 at the Delaware Art Museum, is aimed at highlighting the diversity of the Taiwanese film industry and showing how it has evolved over time. Three films, all with English subtitles, will be shown at the Hockessin Library on Mondays in September, showcasing the modern Taiwanese movie industry. Independent director Wei Te-Sheng’s first feature film, “Cape No. 7,” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 13. The movie tells the story of a singer who returns home after failing to launch his career in the big city, only to become involved in tragically unfulfilled love story. “Three Times,” directed by award-winner Hou Hsiao-Hsien, will be shown at 6:30 p.m....

You still have time to vote with an absentee ballot if you will not be able to visit your normal polling place for the Delaware Primary next Tuesday September 14. Well, we are now one week away from the Delaware Primary with interesting races scattered throughout the state for both Democrats and Republicans.  If you will be unable to vote at your normal polling place next week, you can vote absentee by mail or by visiting your County Department of Elections office (downtown Wilmington in New Castle County) until noon on Monday.  To vote absentee you must fall into one of several categories: - Nature of your work prevents you from going.- Your public service to the US or State of Delaware prevents you from voting.- Your religion prevents you from going.- You will be on vacation out of th...

Last night I had the chance to attend some primary debates in Delaware hosted by the Community Newspaper and Greater Hockessin Area Development Association at the Hockessin Fire Hall.  Now that we are heavily into the political season with the Delaware primary only two weeks away, I thought it might be good time to take a look at the early issues. (Warning to those looking for real estate: this is mostly politics and personal observations) In the first panel, 3 of the 5 primary candidates were in attendance running for the US Senate and US Congress on the Republican side.  Michael Castle (R) and Rose Izzo (R) were not in attendance.  Christine O'Donnell (R) did a great job highlighting some key concerns with the absent Congressman.  While Michele Rollins (R) and Glen Urquhart (R) both...

There’s a lot more happening in Kennett Square than fungus spawning. While the Pennsylvania community proudly protects its title as Mushroom Capital of the World, it took more than bushels of baby bellas for Kennett Square to be ranked fifth on Budget Travel Magazine’s list of America’s Coolest Small Towns. The town received more than 44,000 online votes to claim the fifth spot. (Look for the rankings in the September issue of the magazine.) In the meantime, here are five mushroom-free reasons to visit Kennett Square. 1. Murder Mystery Art Stroll. There haven’t been any real murders in Kennett Square in recent memory, but every year there’s a fake one. The Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society will stage its murder mystery on August 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., during the monthly First Frida...

Here's the latest Hockessin Real Estate Updatefor the summer of 2010. Activity has been good as market conditions have improved with interest rates staying low and prices staying at realistic levels. Sensible sellers are pricing realistically and listening to what the market has to say. Pricing is very important in today's market and condition plays a huge part in the saleability of your home. Since the last Hockessin Real Estate Update our market seems to be even more closer to a balanced market. Indications tell us it's still a buyer's market, however, many homes that are priced competitively and well prepped for maximum showing condition are getting top dollar.                    As of today, July 20, there are 77 active listings in Hockessin 19707. List prices are ranging from a low...

The building that houses the Hockessin Police Athletic League isn’t just for kids. New Castle County’s Hockessin Community Activity Center shares the space with PAL and keeps its half of the building buzzing with programs for adults and young children. “There are a lot of people who have no idea this building serves anyone except kids aged 8 to 18,” said Ruth Markle, assistant administrator of community activity centers. But the activity center has been operating since PAL opened its doors in 2001, offering classes in everything from computer literacy to zumba, Markle said. More than 27,000 people visited last year, she said. One thing that makes the center unique is that some of its courses are offered on a drop-in basis, she said, like open weight training and pick up basketball. And...

On the banks of the Red Clay Creek, Yorklyn, Delaware is near the border with Pennsylvania that was drawn by Mason and Dixon. The swiftly moving creek once powered numerous mills from Pre-Revolutionary times to the early 20th century. Industry began here with John Garrett in 1730, when he opened a gristmill in an area called at the time "Auburn." He had purchased the land from the estaate of Letitia Penn, William Penn's daughter. Later members of the Garrett family built snuff and paper mills and added to the family fortune. Above are some of what remains on the site of the Garrett Snuff Mills, which finely ground tobacco from Maryland and Virginia into snuff (which is a type of smokeless tobacco). Flooding from a hurricane in the 90's destroyed shops which were located in some of the b...

Properties that have sold and settled since the beginning of 2010 range from $295,000 to $800,000. We have seen some positive changes since the last Hockessin real estate report.           Here's an overall market update for our area which includes nearby Pennsylvania and Maryland. Here are some Hockessin Realtors® doing community service with spring highway cleanup. The Patterson Schwartz Hockessin Office participates in the DelDot Adopt A Highway program. They are dedicating their Adopt A Highway to the memory of Charlie Gaines who then ran the Patterson Schwartz Marketing Department and originally started the project with DelDot quite a number of years ago. Charlie adopted the section of Valley Road between Rt. 41 and Little Baltimore Rd.           These Hockessin Realtors® doing community service are pictured above from left to right - Dave Iliff, Dick Harper, Jason Giles, Diane Iliff, Dawn Douglas and Kim Vella. It was a beautiful spring day, perfect for handing out the "weapons of trash destruction" and donning the blinding yellow Adopt A Highway vests! Sign...

Here's the latest Hockessin real estate update and a few words about the national economy as well from the Hockessin Real Estate experts. There are currently 68 properties listed for sale in Hockessin 19707 ranging from $197,000 to $989,900. The pending (under contract) listings number 24. Inventory isn't really high at all and right now this is a healthy balance between listed and pended properties! The chart below shows a comparison of Hockessin properties average list price, sale price and days on market from 1998 to present.                 We are cautiously optimistic about the Hockessin real estate market. Buyers are jumping off the fence as the expanded and extended tax credits will be coming to an end before long and people are beginning to realize that now that the government h...

We are constantly hearing about and also being involved in conversations about Hockessin Real Estate and the state of the economy. Hockessin real estate like real estate everywhere in the country has declined in value and adjusted to the supply and demand. Buyer's incomes simply weren't keeping up with the drastic increase in values throughout most of the first decade of the century, so gradually prices started to decrease. We seem to be at a point now where values are settling in and although that is a good feeling, we are not out of the woods yet. Our economy has got to get back on track and guess what is the main driving force? You guessed it - Real Estate - Buyers and Sellers coming together in the marketplace. As most people are aware, the government has jumped in to the mortgage b...

If you are thinking about shopping for or selling a home in Hockessin find a good Hockessin Realtor® and ask the right questions. Find a Realtor® that listens more than they talk and one that will put your needs before theirs. The job and duty of a Realtor® is to first create value for their client and even ascertain whether or not the potential client actually needs their services at this point and time. Now may or may not be the right time to make the move. The client may live well outside the Realtor's® area of expertise let alone "serviceable" area. Hockessin, Delaware is a unique area and it pays to know and work with a skilled and knowlegeable Hockessin Realtor® if you are in the market as a seller or a buyer.              Ask the right questions when interviewing a Hockessin Real...
