I just heard about a new law in my home town of West Hartford, Connecticut that bans open alcoholic beverage containers.  Who knew with all the talk of the state budget problems and federal debt ceiling crisis that we had bigger problems-- open containers!     Fox News reports that residents have mixed reactions:   West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square have quickly  become the outdoor dining capital of central Connecticut and apparently "pre-gaming" or the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the way to local restaurants and bars has gotten out of hand.  (News to me as I live a block from West Hartford Center and have yet to witness this problem!)  However, only seven states regulate open air liquor consumption so this issue is left to municipalities to legislate.  Does this mean t...

West Hartford Center shopping just keeps getting better and better!  Lululemon, which sells men's and women's athletic and "yoga-inspired" apparel, will be filling the space formerly occupied by Bennett's Card Shop at 987 Farmington Avenue in West Hartford Center.  I guess active wear is the newest fashion trend (let's hope Stacey & Clinton don't find out!) The day after the new store opens, on Saturday, Aug. 6, Lululemon will offer a free yoga class "all-levels — we'll have mats" — on the corner of La Salle and Farmington from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.   Closing the street for yoga-- this should be good! Visit their facebook page for more information.

A Great Restaurant Experience in West Hartford, CT After shopping in West Hartford Center on Saturday, we had worked up quite an appetite.  One of the restaurants that I had been wanting to try was closed so we meandered through the streets until we happened upon Rizzuto's Restaurant.  We checked out the menu and decided that it looked like a great place to have a leisurely lunch.  The day was warm, dry, and breezy, so we asked for a table in the outdoor dining area. There was plenty of shade provided by large awnings and the area looked out over an expanse of lawn with sculptures and plantings.  Lovely.     The menu had the usual offerings of appetizers, sandwiches, pizzas (lunch menu), but we opted for an interesting array of small plates to share.  Offered were meat, vegetables, and ...

West Hartford Portrait Photographer. I had the pleasure of having my portrait taken recently by West Hartford Portrait Photographer Amber Jones of Studio Pura. I wanted to update my head-shot to better capture “me”. The results couldn’t be better, she perfectly captured me; the happy, relaxed, real, organic as several have said it person. Hoping to share with everyone how great she is I decided to interview her recently about her West Hartford Portrait Business Studio Pura. What is your secret to capturing such great portraits?   I want my clients to be comfortable. From knowing what to wear, to the fact that little blemishes can be easily erased, to most importantly being relaxed as I take pictures. You will remember I asked you about your family, and your children while taking your po...

If you haven't tried Joey Garlics in Farmington or Newington yet, you'll have the opportunity to take a bite in West Hartford soon.  A Joey Garlics Express will be opening on Park Road (at the former Barb's Pizza location).  JG is in the process of preparing the space for their newest location which is sure to be a hit. Their New Haven-style brick oven pizza, is characterized by a crust similar in texture to rustic peasant bread, cooked to a darker color, allowing the toppings to blend together. The different ingredients caramelize, bringing out their naturally bold, sweet or savory flavors.  Although the Express menu may be limited, it will definitely be worth the trip!  This is a great addition to West Hartford's long list of eateries.  Check out Joey's site and join Joey's Club to fi...

West Hartford is home to many small businesses and best schools—overall, it is a one of the: this is it, towns in CT. I want to tell you about best Russian grocery store in West Hartford, located on 200 Park Road, (860) 233-2200. Anjella Zagorsky bought store in October, 2003. Since then, Europe, Russian grocery store, gained its popularity amongst local community and increased its profit at least twofold. Most important, Anjella, the owner, sells only fresh produce in her store. Mrs. Zagorsky says that she doesn’t look after quantity of the produce; she prefers quality of product she sells. That is why she sends a truck to New York warehouses for fresh fish, meat, and baked goods on daily basis: for fish, ones a week; for meat, twice a week; for baked goods two-three times a week.    ...

Spice Bush Swamp is a very pleasant, 34-acre park run by the same people who run Westmoor Park. There are 3 walking trails in back of the pond which I'll bet most residents don't even know exist. It is a perfect walk for the dog or a nice place to stroll through the woods.  During mosquito season make sure you have bug spray - it is a swamp... The swamp is a very popular destination for elementary school trips where the kids hunt for crayfish and other wildlife.  They come home pretty dirty from school that day! On opening day for the fishing season the West hartford Leisure Services hosts an opening day fishing derby at Spice Bush Swamp. Spice Bush is located on Mountain Road. On opening day up to 200 anglers fish the pond for trout and the winners ger prizes. It starts early (6:30am a...

Want a home in "The Center"? Or "Bishop's Corner"? Perhaps "West of Mountain Road" is more your style?  Or maybe even in "Elmwood"?  It seems that when buyers are searching for homes in West Hartford, it's all about the neighborhood.  Simply ask someone where they live and they'll give you the street address. If you don't recognize the street, they'll quickly follow up with, "Oh, it's in the Morley district" or "it's in Norfeldt".  But for those who are unfamiliar with the various intricacies of the the town it can be difficult to know exactly what that means. Here's a quick summary of the West Hartford neighborhoods.  A West Hartford neighborhood primer, if you will: "The Center" - This term gets thrown around a lot in our MLS since homes in "The Center" have the advantage of a high w...

I'm always a little surprised when I hear people comment about the dire real estate market; I just don't see it.  In one of my market areas (West Hartford, CT) single-family home sales increased by 28% during the first two months of 2011 when compared to the same time period one year ago.  During January and February 54 single family homes were sold in West Hartford with an average sales price of $342,651; in 2010 42 homes sold with an average sales price of $317,014.  That's an 8% increase in sales price, folks!  Some interesting statistics considering that the tax credit was in full swing during that time period last year. A closer look at the numbers (for those of you who like data), shows that sellers are still getting 96% of their list price; another positive sign.  Days on market ...

In 2005, the population in the town of West Hartford was estimated at 61,173, a small city located in the Hartford County area.  This is where West Hartford Reservoir is located. Prior to the year 1854 in which the town was incorporated, this town was a parish of Hartford. Its downtown area is termed as West Hartford Center and is an up market inner ring suburb of the Hartford town primarily. West Hartford is the downtown area of the town, centered on South / North Main Street and Farmington Avenue. Since the late seventeenth century, the community's hub has been the West Hartford Center. It has also been popularly rated as one of the greatest cities for settling families and in the next decade it is predicted to be one of the best cities. In America as of now it is termed as the 55th b...

How Much are the Real Estate Taxes on West Hartford, CT, Homes for Sale? Many times when I send listings "automatically" to my clients, and they include homes for sale in West Hartford, Connecticut, my clients question the amount of the taxes.  A few years ago, West Hartford, Connecticut, had a revaluation on the assessed values for homes and decided to do a phase-in of the taxes.  As happened in many towns, the phase-in was not well received, and the phase-in was discontinued.   However, the Taxes tab in our multiple listing service still links to the tax records for the full "end of phase-in" assessments, so if the Broker does not double check this amount, the information on a listing can be completely wrong.  For example, one of my past listings has a current assessment of $197,566 a...

Did you know that Trader Joe's is owned by ALDI? I was not surprised by all the comments generated by Mike Saunders' post on the new Trader Joe's that opened in his home town.  Those who are familiar with Trader Joe's agreed wholeheartedly with him and those who are not familiar with it were left wishing they had one too. I have loved Trader Joe's since my daughter introduced me to it when she was living in Boston.  Now, I manage to go to the closest one to me (which is 20 minutes away) as often as I can. What I find fascinating is the history of Trader Joe's which began in California by Joe Coulombe and was bought out in 1979 by Albrecht Discount (ALDI), a grocery chain that started in Germany in 1948.  Trader Joe's has the vibe of a Whole Foods while Aldi has the basic no-frills wareh...
