TONY’S Men’s Shop – Waterbury’s Fashion Center For Men   You know, there really aren’t too many places that a man can find good quality clothing these days. It seems as if all of the clothing specialty places are all for the women…but all is not lost, because there is Tony’s Men’s Shop.   I remember very well the first day I had set foot into Tony’s Men’s Shop, back in 1996. I had just returned home from college, and I was in need of a decent shirt and tie. The owner, Tony Nunes, was very helpful as he guided me around the store, making suggestions and telling me about the great sales he had going on at the time. I settled on a cobalt blue shirt and a nice eclectic tie – I still have them today, some thirteen years later.   It was not the last time that I visited Tony’s Men’s Shop. Ove...

FRANKIE’S – A Waterbury Tradition   I remember when I was a young boy back in the late 70’s, riding with my parents to the Frankie’s on Lakewood Road. It was always a treat going to Frankie’s on a Friday night, to have a deliciously extra-long hot dog on a toasted bun, with mouth-watering steak fries all crispy and golden brown.   Every now and again, we would stop by the Frankie’s on Watertown Avenue on the way to a game at Municipal Stadium or coming from the annual fireworks display during the summer. There was nothing like the hot dogs served at Frankie’s, not then, and not now.   At that time, when we stopped by the Frankie’s on Watertown Avenue, I had no idea that we were partaking of a tradition that predated even my parents.   The original Frankie’s hot dog stand on Watertown A...

MAR-VIC CLEANERS AND TAILORS Mar-Vic Cleaners has been the cleaners of choice for my family as long as I can remember. Every suit I ever had, every dress that my mother, sisters, and grandmothers wore, when it was time for them to be dry-cleaned, they would head downtown to Mar-Vic Cleaners. No matter what type of stain they may have gotten on them, they always came back from Mar-Vic Cleaners looking like new, well pressed and not a spot remaining. One day, when I was a young man, I discovered the need for some tailoring services. A pair of pants for a suit needed to be professionally taken in and hemmed. I did not know that Mar-Vic Cleaners also had tailoring services. When I brought the pants in to be cleaned one day, I mentioned the looseness around the waist and the unraveling cuff,...

Schmidt's & Serafines, Inc located at 464 Chase Ave in Waterbury, Ct has been a family owned and operated hardware store since 1924. Two friends started the business and eventually the family merger was completed when sons married into the Serafine's family. The store is currently run by Jeff and Charlie Schmidt.   As in the old fashioned general stores, every morning some of the inventory is placed on display outside of the store, just in case somebody may have forgotten what gets sold inside. When you do go inside, you will be overwhelmed with the diverse amount of items available, and the courteous nature of the staff. Need a special part for a repair around the house and not sure what to do? Bring it in and be pleasantly surprised at how well you will be treated. If you walk in and ...

PIZZA CASTLE- Waterbury, CT: The Best Pizza In Town Pizza Castle pizza is  the best pizza I have ever had in my 35 years of living. But pizza is pizza, right? NOPE.     When you want thick crust, with lots of cheese, and an abundance of your choice of toppings (pepperoni and sausage are my favorites), then there is only one local restaurant that can deliver a piece of pie so good that you'll just have to come back for more. The great thing about Pizza Castle is that they do not just serve pizza.   I discovered chicken marsala when I was in college, and when I came back home, the only place that could serve it correctly was...you guessed it...Pizza Castle.   Stuffed shells? One of my wife's favorites. Where does she always order it from? Yes, Pizza Castle.   Pizza Castle, as it is called...

My childhood and probably my life were best defined by the values taught to me by parents who grew up with very little. To say that anybody grows up with nothing is incorrect as material goods are not what develops or shapes a life. The character and sole of human beings is developed by the lessons we learn from our family and most importantly our parents. We were probably more fortunate than most because in the late 1940's my parents bought their first home, a 3 family house on Washington Hill in Waterbury, Ct. I remember the open porches, the asbestos siding, the small yard, but to my family it was a palace because it had taken them out of a 4 story 30+ apartment building. As with many families after WW2, there was usually enough money for food and the necessities, but when it came to...

This is the USS New York. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center. It is the fifth in a new class of warship -designed for missions that include specialoperations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marinesto be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft. Steel from the World Trade Center was melteddown in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was pouredinto the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,'recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there.  'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.' Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said thatwhen the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my...

AMALFI’S PIZZA AND ITALIAN RISTORANTE                   I fell in love with Amalfi’s grinders the first time I had one.   It was a regular ham and cheese grinder, with the usual – mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and onions, salt and pepper, oil and vinegar. Nothing that I couldn’t have gotten from any other place – except that it was rather late in the day, and Amalfi’s Pizza was the one of the few places still open.   I have to admit, I was very curious about the bread that Amalfi’s Pizza used for their grinder rolls. It was like nothing I had ever seen before.   The bread, it turns out, was the secret to Amalfi’s Pizza making a great grinder. Amalfi’s Pizza makes its own grinder and sandwich rolls fresh in the shop.     And the size – oh, Lord – the size of the grinder rolls makes it worth g...

The Lisboa Restaurant on Lafayette Street in the Brooklyn section of Waterbury, Ct is an experience well worth the effort but only if you come very hungry. Located at 422 Lafayette, in the heart of a once thriving industrial area, is this understated building that once was a watering hole for the local factory workers. Twenty years ago, Tony Carvalho, the owner saw an opportunity to combine his dream of owning his own business, with his love of cooking and opened this oasis of epicurean delights. In order to do justice to this post, we decided to have dinner to confirm that the restaurant was worthy of recognition. The Lisboa Restaurant is a first come, first served restaurant so don't try for reservations. Also, as everything is cooked to order, don't make plans for the rest of the eve...

Highland Ave in Waterbury, Ct runs through the center of what locally is referred to as Town Plot. A ride along this street is to see the town as it must have been years ago, with the stately multi-families, older colonials all well maintained and standing forward with pride of ownership written all over. The section of Highland Ave that gets the most recognition is the Mt Carmel area, so named because MT Carmel Church and school stand out in an isolated block all to themselves.  Part of what makes the section so unique is that over the years it has retained it's strong ethnic flavor. This area has long been an area sought after by people of Italian descent. The stone walls behind which are the manicured lawns, and to look in the yards would find the perfectly organized gardens. If you ...

Great Waterbury CT Schools   School districts in Connecticut are classified into Economic Reference Groups (ERG) – these schools share similar socio-economic factors such as education level of parents, job statistics, and income levels.     There are nine ERG’s in the state of Connecticut. Waterbury, by virtue of its urban characteristics, falls into the lowest group, ERG I, which includes all of the state’s largest cities.   Considering that Waterbury, CT schools are classified in the lowest ERG in the state, someone considering a move to Waterbury, CT might question if there are any great schools in Waterbury, CT.     My answer to that question: Yes, there are several great Waterbury, CT schools.     So, what makes a great Waterbury, CT school?     Several factors, actually. The major...
