We have all done it at some point, made a list of 'I Wills' at the beginning of the New year with the best of intentions, then withered from our devotions in short order. Let's cancel the appointment, it's snowing is something we New Englanders hear all too often this time of year. Common sense says it's the right thing to do especially as we live in an area of numerous hills, narrow streets with lots of cars parked on the streets and road crews that can't be everywhere at once. Many New Englanders are well prepared for this snow and know that the best response is to wait it out. I have had visitors from Venezuela for the last 10 days and they are forever out shopping. One of the things I cautioned about in the snow is driving too fast. Connecticut mortgage rates moved higher last week for refinancing, and home purchase. The bond market took a beating as stocks surged despite mixed data. Existing CT home sales in November rose a surprising 7.4%. However, revised gross domestic product figures showed the economy only grew 2.2%, which was weaker than the expected 2.8% mark. Personal income and outlays data came in weaker than expected helping a bit. Unfortunately, the thin trading conditions magnified the earlier losses and made it difficult to recover. For the week CT interest rates rose by about 1 3/8 discount points. The Treasury auctions will take center stage next week. The other morning while getting ready for work, my wife commented that the house seemed exceptionally dry. Ours is a warm air heat system and at the end of the last heating season the humidifier went. I immediately went out and bought a new humidifier, but didn't put it in right away. Over the summer I forgot to finish the job.   As my wife was commenting on the still not repaired humidifier, she ended the conversation with the comment, "I suppose it will have to wait until we sell the house. Basketball 12-18-09   Wilby Freshmen Basketball Win over Holy Cross     Wilby High School's Freshmen basketball team won their season opener on December 18th in a 69-47 blowout of Holy Cross. The game was a first for me on many levels…the first basketball game that I have ever gone to, ever...the first time I’ve gotten to watch my stepson, Daquan, play basketball for his school team, the first time that my youngest son, Jr., went to a basketball game...and watching the performance of the freshmen Wildcats against the Crusaders was nothing short of exhilarating.     The Wilby Wildcats were led in scoring by Ezra Coleman, who scored 28 points, followed by John Mitchell and Daquan McDougald, who both rounded out the team’s effort with double digit scores.     12/25/2009

Waterbury, CT Neighborhoods at Christmastime     There is nothing more fun at Christmastime than decorating around the house. How do I know this? There are more houses decorated around various neighborhoods in every city than you can possibly imagine.     But who has the time to travel around a city or even a small town to look at the Christmas decorations? Waterbury, CT at Christmastime   Decorating during the holidays is a part of many towns’ tradition. I have been through many towns at Christmastime during my short life, and the displays I’ve seen range from quaint to simply majestic.   Waterbury, CT at Christmastime is beautiful. I was remarking to a friend of mine the other day how absolutely spectacular Hubbard Park, in Meriden, is at this time of year. I winced at the time that I couldn’t say something like that about my hometown, and then I took a second look. Along the main streets in downtown Waterbury, every light pole is decorated with green garland and a lighted wreath and red bow. Mortgage bond prices were near unchanged last week holding Connecticut mortgage rates steady. Trade was extremely volatile with swings of 1/2% in discount points common. The Treasury auctions were not as well received by foreign accounts as traders were hoping. The US relies on foreign central banks such as China to fund our deficit spending. If China were to decrease or cease purchasing US bonds and notes, rates would rise. Interest rates finished the week near unchanged. The inflation data will be the most important releases this week. Inflation erodes the value of fixed income securities causing prices to fall and Connecticut mortgage rates to rise. The Fed meeting will also take center stage.
