Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) Celebrates 40 Years of Service The Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) will celebrate its 40th anniversary this weekend with a night of world-class music and dance at the Paul Mellon Arts Center on the campus of Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford. The organization has come a long way in the 40 years since a group of local Latinos gathered in a storefront on South Cherry Street. Today, they have their own building, an executive director (Maria Harlow) and a support staff, but their mission remains the same: to help Wallingford’s growing Latino community by offering a wide range of services, most of which are free of charge. Some of these include: document translation, transportation to medical, legal and immigration appointments, programs to p...

What's For Lunch in Wallingford CT? Being the sucker for good food that I am, I’m always happy when I find a new place that serves up good grub. While out running errands today, the wife and I decided to try out a relatively new eatery in town, a place with the quaintly endearing name of “Knuckleheads”. We knew it had opened up back in December 2011, but hadn’t had a chance to try it out yet, so we thought today was a good day to do so, and we weren’t disappointed. Named after owner Anthony Morgillo’s adopted pit bull, the restaurant is tucked away on the lower end of Center Street and sports a rather unimposing exterior that belies the eclectic menu of food and drink awaiting you inside. The menu sports sandwiches like “The Mean Picholine”, “The Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese”, and “The Smok...

Everybody Loves a Carnival! Once again, Wallingford's Church of the Resurrection is sponsoring their annual carnival April 25th through the 28th in the parking lot adjacent to the church. This year's edition comes earlier than in years past, as the start date has usually been in June, but that should not have any effect on the fun, games, rides and great food that always accompanies this much anticipated event. The venue will open nightly at 6pm and features a midway with more things to do than you can shake a stick at! Some of the fun to be had includes games of skill, chance and just plain ol' luck (NOTE: must be 18 years or older to play games of chance), rides for young and old including a ferris wheel, merry-go-round and roller coaster, and a Fun House. The first two days are usual...

This Art is Garbage...Really! It’s a fact that recycling has many benefits. It saves energy, reduces pollution, and helps preserve natural resources, among other things. But did you know it can also help inspire some budding artists? Hard to believe, but for the past two years Wallingford’s Town Recycling Committee has been doing just that through their Recycling Art Contest. Started back in 2010 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the contest helps raise awareness of the importance of recycling and is now an annual event. This year’s event is now accepting entries and is open to students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Here are the entry guidelines: • Entries may be either art sculptures or useful items made from materials which have had a previous life. • Project...

Wallingford Gets Ladies's Fast Pitch Softball League If you're a young lady 18 years of age or older and you love, love, LOVE to play fast-pitch softball, but were always disappointed that there was no place to play in Wallingford, your time has come. Local resident (and good friend) Kathy Thuerling feels the same way, and has decided to create a fast pitch softball league for players 18 and older. Kathy has spent over 20 years coaching young players in the fundamentals of the game, including her own two daughters, and was surprised to find that, when players outgrew little league play, there was no local league for them to move into. So, she's rectifying that situation. In the inaugural year of the league which will start this coming June, Kathy would like to see 12 registered teams an...

Besides, the funds that were collected earlier this month  by the Church that I attend, the Ward Street Church of Christ, in Wallingford, CT., to provide gifts for older children who many times get left out, we are also doing a couple of other things during this Holiday Season.   Our teens have been coordinating a Food Drive, and the food will be use to supply our Food Pantry at Church as well as donate much of it to the Food Pantry in town.  Our teens have done a great job in collecting food, as well as our members in making contributions to assist their efforts.   Many of our members will also be serving at the local Soup Kitchen, and Homeless Shelter.  They will be bring food to the Soup Kitchen as well as serving the food several nights in the up coming weeks.  Many of the same peop...
