The technology of LED light fixtures is rapidly improving in the market.  After the ban of 100-watt incandescent bulbs, the growth of available replacements has ballooned.  75-watt incandescent bulbs are also on the way out, and 60-watt bulbs are next.     When energy-saving light bulbs first came on the market, compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs were one of very few choices available.  A 13-watt CFL will provide about the same light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb, but it contains mercury.  The other problem is that I have yet to install a CFL that has a life expectancy anywhere close to what is advertised on the packaging.     LED’s are very promising, and have many advantages over CFL’s and incandescent bulbs.  LED’s are great for shock resistance, and vibration.  Garage door openers and...

Why Extension Cords are Dangerous in Riverside, CT   The correct use of an extension cord is in a temporary manner.  For instance, when using a power drill you plug it into an extension cord. Later, when you are done with the drill, you unplug the extension cord.  The cord becomes a problem when it is used in place of permanent wiring in the home.  I see this all the time in Riverside and other parts of Greenwich, CT.  Typically in older homes, the garage door opener is frequently plugged into an extension cord. Usually, when a garage door installer puts in the unit, there was no outlet in the ceiling, so he or she plugged it into an extension cord and told the homeowner to have an electrician install a permanent outlet.  Unfortunately, that incident occurred over twenty years, and seve...

When the Power Goes Out, Who Should You Call?   It is quite common for tree branches to fall during a storm and knock down power lines.  Unfortunately, many homeowners are unsure as to what parts of the electrical system is their responsibility and what parts will be repaired by the utility company.  This is especially a problem during massive outages when homeowners may be without power for several days while waiting for the utility company to show up, then are told they also need to call a licensed electrician which will mean additional time with out power.     After a storm, when it is safe to go outside, a homeowner should inspect any damage to their structure or surrounding property.  Be extremely careful if there are any downed power lines.  Always assume those cables are live and...

This time, it was not my laptop sticker...but my voice.  There is no way he could have seen my laptop, nor my shirt that says "The Flooring Girl," because he was right next to me.  Instead, he heard my voice.   I got a call from a customer who wants to refinish their hardwood floors in Katonah.  A past customer had recommended us, and he loved the ways their floors turned out.  He loved the finish and wanted to have the same for his home.  He was asking me questions about types of polyurethane and finishes.   When I got off the phone, the person next to me handed me his card and asked for mine.  As it turns out, he is a painter!  Yay!  Painting and flooring go hand in hand, and we can refer business to each other.  He is in Riverside CT and does both CT and Westchester; I'm in Westchest...

Year to date Sales of Single family homes are down 60.6%.   We have sold 97 Single Family homes year to date. The average sale price has consistently dropped since September of 08 and is 20.8% below last year at this time. The average days on the market for homes that have sold this year also consistently went up to a high of 294.  Last month it went down.   This indicates to me that sellers are becoming more aware and are pricing properties to secure contracts quickly, no longer are the days of testing the market. The list price to sold price ratio is 88.4% for homes that have sold this year.   Last year at this time is was running closer to 96% The inventory is up about 16.5% from last year.  This increased significantly in May and June of this year. The Absorption rate is up to a rec...
