This is one of our local teams that I have followed very closely for the last three years. The Paonia Eagles have a wonderful program and some very talented players. I've really enjoyed watching these kids play some hard hitting, but yet clean football.In 2013 and 2014 the Eagles won the Division 1A State Championship. Last year they went all the way to the championship game, and lost a close battle with Buena Vista.The Eagles will start off their 2016 season with a home game on 9/2 against Center, CO. This year marks the 70th year for this festival, and it just gets bigger and better each year. This festival was started to celebrate the cherry harvest in the Paonia area of Delta County. It's one of the longest running festivals in Colorado. The fun starts on Friday, July 1st and lasts the entire 4th of July holiday weekend.    Cherry Days always takes place on the 4th of July weekend. It was started by the local Lions Club in 1946.  Friday Paonia kicks off the weekend with Downtown Days. Throughout the weekend there will be a variety of events happening including a cherry pit spitting contest, baking contest, live music, a 5K run, a rodeo and more. It Was Down to the Wire, but There's No Championship Victory for PaoniaThe Football Championship game was held in Buena Vista where the Paonia team took on the Buena Vista Demons. The Eagles were trying for the team's third straight Division 1A Championship, but it wasn't meant to be. Although the Eagles came out strong and dominated the first half of the game. Turnovers and penalties killed the Eagles in the second half. With only about 28 seconds left in the 4th quarter, Paonia was down by a touchdown, and they got the ball back. An interception thrown by the Paonia quarterback ended any hopes of winning the game. Paonia Eagles Football Advances to Third Straight Championship Game 2015This wasn't an easy game for the Paonia Eagles. They traveled to Fort Collins and played the Resurrection Christian Cougars. The Eagles are use to dominating a game, and they didn't take the lead in this one until very late in the 4th quarter. There was about four minutes left in the game when Paonia finally took the lead. The final score is 21 - 15. This was the semi finals game.Paonia will travel again next week (Nov. 28) for the final game of the Division 1A Championship Series. This is the big game. The one that determines which team will be the division champions. Paonia will take on Buena Vista in Buena Vista. Game times are normally at 1pm, but check with the schools to confirm. Just Another Town Along the Road I had a fairly easy Saturday. I had to meet up with two clients and I took some pictures for BPOs, but that was it. The hardest part of my day was smiling my way through the crowd at Walmart. The scenery in my area makes it fun and easy to be on the road. Each small mountain town also has it's own charm. I had to do a bit of traveling today. It was no big deal...especially when you have beautiful scenery to enjoy.  In Delta County, CO we are blessed with some amazing scenery, and when a storm is threatening, it can get even more beautiful. Paonia Eagles Football Team Goes All the Way...State Champions What a great game played by both Paonia and Buena Vista, but the Paonia Eagles came out on top to win the Colorado Division 1A State Football Championship. The final score is 21 - 7. The game was played in Paonia.  The Eagles started off strong. The Buena Vista Demons couldn't even get a first down until the second quarter of the game. In the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Demons capitalized on a well done on side kick and started heading down the field. Anticipation built on the Paonia side of the field. The Demons came within half a yard of scoring another touchdown, but the Paonia defense held on. That was the final play of the game. Updated Nov 15 Paonia Eagles Football Team Advances in State Playoffs What a great game the Paonia Eagles played today against Resurrection Christian from Loveland, CO. It was a physical game and I don't think the visiting Cougars were ready to be pushed around like they were. The Eagles played hard and fair and physically over powered the Cougars. The final score is 35 - 15.  This means the Paonia Eagles will advance to the division 1A state championship game. The Eagles will take on Buena Vista. That game will be next Saturday, November 22nd. The location hasn't been determined. The early thoughts are that it will be a home game for Paonia.  In other local football news, the Delta Panthers lost their home game against Discovery Canyon from Colorado Springs.  Paonia Eagles Football Team Advances in State Playoffs It was a heck of a game for Paonia. The team looked great and played hard, and for these young men, the season isn't over yet. The Paonia Eagles shut out Wiggins, Colorado with a final score of 49 - 0.  For the second half of the game, a running clock was used because of the score disparity. This is where the clock keeps running and doesn't stop until the game is over.  This was the first round of playoff football action for the Paonia Eagle. The Paonia stands were packed with fans, and the team played a great game for all of us. Paonia is a division 1A school. The 3rd Annual Colorado Hard Cider Festival November 1st, 2014 I'm starting to see the posters around town. It's almost time for the Annual Hard Cider Festival. This is the perfect fall event held outside of Paonia, CO with those wonderful mountains as a back drop.  What a great end to the harvest season...to be sitting in an orchard listening to live music and sipping hard cider. 2014 Mountain Harvest Festival Paonia, CO Information Delta County is proud of it's agricultural roots. These growing/agricultural traditions run deep, and the area is still doted with small family orchards, organic gardens and independent roadside fruit and veggie stands. Part of this tradition gets people together to celebrate the harvest.  For the 14th straight year, Paonia will host it's Mountain Harvest Festival. We have a lot of churches in my area that post clever sayings on their signs. I like to read them, but sometimes wish they would change the signs more often. 2014 Paonia Eagles High School Football Schedule I'm looking forward to watching and following all of the Delta County High School football teams. They all made it to the state playoffs last year. I think we are going to see some more good high school football action all over the county again this year.      Last year the Paonia Eagles won the Colorado State Division 1A Title. 2014 Paonia Cherry Days...Things to do in Delta County CO. Mark your calendar for the 68th Annual Paonia Cherry Days. This year the festival takes place on July 4th & 5th.  There will be plenty of live music and food on both days. Cherry Days kicks off bright and early on the morning of the 4th with a pancake breakfast at 6AM. The park opens at 11AM and this is where you will find the food and craft vendors. Throughout the day you can enjoy live music, karate demonstrations, fly casting and a coal shoveling contest. There will also be a cherry pie eating contest and bake off.  On Saturday the park will open again at 10AM. Get there early, though, to catch more of the fly casting competition. Paonia High School Wins State Championship Football Title. The 2013 Paonia High School Football Champions are celebrating tonight. The Eagles beat the Centauri Falcons 32-24. This was a division 1A game. Close to 1000 people showed up in Paonia for the game. That's almost as many people that live in town. This was a come from behind victory. After the first quarter, Centauri led 12-6. Paonia thought that was enough and took the lead in the second quarter and held on to win the game. In regular season play, Centauri handed Paonia their only defeat of the season. That was a close game with a final score of 7-6. Paonia High School Advances in the 2013 Colorado State Football Playoffs. The Paonia Eagle took an early lead to the win the game 28-14. This was a Division 1A playoff game. The next game is the big one. This is the one for the state title. It appears this will be at Paonia. This information isn't confirmed as of yet. Paonia, CO High School Football Playoff Information 2013. The Paonia Eagles defeated the Monte Vista Pirates in the Colorado State 1A Division on Saturday, November 9th. It was a perfect fall day for football. The Paonia Eagles played at home and put on a fine show. The final score was 31-15. The Eagles are wearing the black jerseys.
