The 2012 Delta County Fair and Rodeo is Underway...Don't Miss The Fun. You can feel the excitement in the air as the fair gets closer. The Delta County Fair and Rodeo is something Delta County residents look forward to every year. This area has really strong agricultural ties, and is known for it's wonderful fruit and other fresh produce. The Delta County Fair and Rodeo is a perfect place for residents to showcase their hard work...not only of produce, but livestock, quilting and other arts and crafts. I look forward to the photography display every year. The 2012 fair starts on August 5 and runs through the 11th. Many events are planned including a demolition derby, tractor pull and rodeo. The highlight of the Delta County Fair and Rodeo is the livestock barn. This is where our local y...

Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery, Hotchkiss, Colorado. Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery was started in 1967 as part of the Colorado River Storage Project Act. The Act calls for fish and wildlife facilities to mitigate the losses and improve conditions for fish and wildlife. The Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is located about five miles west of Hotchkiss, Colorado just south of Hwy 92. The hatchery is one of the few left in the state that is whirliing disease free and this means the hatchery has increased it's fish production to help the Division of Wildlife stock extra lakes in Colorado and surrounding states. Now here's something else really interesting about the Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery...it's fed by Tommy Dowell Spring, which is on the hillside next to the hatchery. This sp...

Welcome to Hotchkiss, Colorado. One Of Delta County's Small Mountain Communities. Those that call Hotchkiss home would say it's the best community Delta, County has to offer. Hotchkiss boasts a rich and varied economy that includes traditional farming and ranching and organic orchards and vineyards and coal mining. The town's elevation is only 5300 feet, so it's perfect for growing a wide variety of fruit. Apple, peach and cherry orchards dot the valley. This small town ( there are less than 1100 people ) is bordered to the north by the Grand Mesa...the world's largest flat top mountain. There are over 300 lakes on Grand Mesa, and many hiking trails. To the south the North Fork of the Gunnison River runs through this valley. It's great for rafting and trout fishing. That's why this area...

Now That's A Lot Of Bull. Hopefully I've got your attention, and now let's direct it to the High Wire Ranch in Hotchkiss, Colorado. It's so neat to just drive by this ranch and see all the elk and bison they raise. In the fall the elk are sporting their large racks (antlers) and it's really something to see. On this particular day the elk were playing it cool away from the road. But the buffalo are also really something to see. Dave and Sue Whittlesey own High Wire Ranch and have been raising buffalo since 1981 and elk since 1987. All of the animals are grass fed and no hormones or antibiotics are used...so the meat is all natural. And pretty tasty, too.  The Whittleseys have been featured in Sunset Magazine and Eating Well Magazine. The meat is shipped all over the country. For more in...
