I read the Napa Valley Register regularly and recently came across the article about Yountville's Pioneer Cemetery by Howard Yune, "Rediscovering the departed at a historic Yountville cemetery", not only fascinating but extremely fun to read. I have to admit I have often wandered through the Cemetery for there are large number of very familiar Napa Valley names to be found there. Not only is the final resting place for George C. Yount, Yountville's founder, but always is a quiet juxtaposition of the past and present. Though not large in size, just under 1,000 are interred here since it's beginning about 160 years, but many of the grave stones have aged to the point, knowing who is buried there and where was largely a big guessing game. Imagine buying a grand Yountville estate and paying $5.9 million for it, closing escrow on February 17th only to see it vanish. This is exactly what happen to 45 Vineyard View, one of the Napa Valley’s premier properties. The home was totally destroyed by fire on February 28th. Not only is it located just a mile from downtown Yountville, but sat on a private, gated 20 plus acre parcel with phenomenal vineyard views. There was a 5,000 square feet main house, guest house, pool house and of course a wine cellar for over 1,000 bottles. Fortunately the property was vacate at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. One can see photos of the fire at the Napa Valley Register article on it. Given the lack of rain, we all want to conserve water in California. The ongoing drought and this year's anemic rain plus the lacking over the last few years, it is soon to become a crisis larger than anyone living here would want. The odd part of this equation, how does installing water conservation items and looking at the actual water costs truly affect your savings. Last year I removed my entire front yard and replaced it with a drought resistant variety of plants. Granted, one would think removing approximately 50% of my lawn would make a big difference in my water usage. Yes and no, but looking at the actual numbers, no. Yountville, set in the center of the Napa Valley and most often is describe as being as its heart. The 2010 census pegged the population at 2,933 with The California Veteran's Home in Yountville members counting for about 800 of this number. Today I would guess this count to be 2,200. However, on any nice weekend, this number swells by 1,000's as the Town is filled by many who come here dine at the likes of The French Laundry, Bottega, Pacific Blues, Redd Wood and more.
