I went to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce last Friday to pick up a couple new street maps of Whittier.  I usually keep a copy in my car and a copy in the portfolio that I carry with me, and the old ones I have are starting to fall apart.I was delighted that they had reduced the price of the map from $2.50 to $2.00; and, since the Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization, they don't charge sales tax.  So I felt like I got a great deal on my two new maps of Whittier.Today was the first time I opened the map to take a look at it.  I was greatly disappointed to discover that this new map of Whittier only includes the incorporated City of Whittier, and it does not include the unincorporated areas of South Whittier and West Whittier / Los Nietos.The old maps were one of the most usefu... 08/22/2010

Day 16 of 365 Things to do in Whittier, CA:  Get a Workout - For Free! Would you like to work out at a health club, but don't want to pay much money for it? I have been going to the Rio Hondo College Fitness Center for the past four years.  The last three years have been free.  Here's the deal:  enroll in the Lifelong Fitness Center for 4 semesters in a row, and your admission to the Fitness Center will be free for the rest of your life.  I don't know how much longer the college will offer this deal, but it has been great for me and many other members. Unlike a private health club, the Rio Hondo Lifelong Fitness Center does not operate 24 hours a day, so it might not be the best choice for people who need to work out late at night or in the middle of the afternoon.  Hours are limited to... 08/20/2010

Market Report on Homes for Sale in Whittier, CA - August 2, 2010 This Market Report is for Whittier, California. This Market Report on Whittier Homes for Sale will focus on Single Family Residences in Whittier, California.  It does not include condominiums or Multifamily Residences.   As of today, there are 381 Single Family Residences for sale in the Whittier area.   81 homes were sold during the month of July.  Over the past three months, 320 homes were sold.   The average home sale price over the past month was $350,850, at an average cost per square foot of $248.30. 297 homes are currently in Backup or Pending status, which is significant because fewer homes are have accepted offers right now than are for sale.  What this means is that there are now more homes available for per buye... 08/02/2010

While Foreclosures seemed to be decreasing when we posted our last Whittier Foreclosure Snapshot on 07/12/2010, the number of active Bank Owned Property listings has actually gone up slightly since. Today, 08/02/10, there are a total of 47 Bank Owned Properties listed for sale in Whittier (11%). With regards to Single Family Homes, 10% of active Whittier home listings are Foreclosures (up 3% from 07/12/10). The highest percentage of Bank Owned Homes can be found in the price range between $0 to $200,000 (with 43%), however, those 43% are actually only 3 homes. On 08/02/2010, there are a total of 165 active Short Sale Listings in Whittier, which make up 38% of active listings. With regards to Single Family Homes, 37% of all active Home Listings are Short Sales. The largest amount of Whittier Home Short Sales are in the price range of $200,000 to $300,000 with 62% (71 homes). For the last couple of years I have been keeping track of how many homes are for sale in the City of Whittier.  Once a month, somewhere between the 20th and 30th of the month, I run a quick check of how many properties are for sale in Whittier. The first date I checked, and started keeping my own records, was May 25, 2008.  At that time, there were a total of 888 properties for sale in the City of Whittier.  804 of those properties for sale were Single Family Residences.  Inventory of homes for sale in Whittier has gone down almost every month since I started.  The low point was on October 15, 2009, when there were only 262 properties in Whittier for sale, including only 236 Single Family Residences.  During the entire year of 2009, any decent home on the market would receive multiple o... 07/20/2010

Whittier Short Sales - have you ever wondered how many homes that are currently on the market in Whittier are Short Sales? The overall number of active Short Sales for Whittier Single Family Homes has been fairly stable the past three weeks, only a 1% increase to 32% of all active Single Family Home listings from last week to this week. There are moderate percentage fluctations within the different price ranges, Whittier homes in the price range between $200,000 to $300,000 seem to be most effected by today's economic factors. Thinking about buying a Whittier pool home? With temperatures finally soaring outside (a "comfortable" 100 degrees this afternoon), one can not help but dream about jumping into the pool.  On average, pool homes sell only slightly above comparable homes without a pool, but a pool seems to make a home more "sellable" and once summer temperatures hit, pool homes are a highly desirable commodity. As mentioned in last week's Whittier Foreclosure Snapshot, the number of Foreclosure Listings seems to be decreasing. On 07/06/10, there were a total of 30 Whittier Single Family Home Foreclosures for sale (which only made up for 8% of all active Whittier Single Family Homes for sale). This week, on 07/12/10, there are only 27 active Whittier bank-owned Single Family Homes listed for sale (only 7% of all active listings). With regards to Whittier bank-owned Condos, there are currently 9 active Foreclosure listings, accounting for 17% of all active Whittier Condo listings. Tropicana Juice Sales at Uptown Whittier Family Fair I stopped at the Tropicana Juice table at the Whittier Uptown Family Fair and spoke with the salesman there.  He was enthusiastic about his great fruits and juices, as you can see in the video. After the video, I bought a delicious bowl of fruit there for my dinner.  It had mango (que mango!), blackberries, strawberries and a couple other fruits.  Man, it was good!  If you are looking for a great bowl of fresh fruit on Wednesday evening, this is the place to get it!   07/08/2010
