This is the 2nd of 17 entries I've written for the "Mortgage Creative Writing Challenge". The traditional Japanese Haiku format follows the syllable pattern of 5 - 7 - 5. The writer might bring in a word or concept (kiga) that evokes memories of a particular season. The last line is usually in sharp contrast (caesura) to the body of the poem. I chose to backdrop each poem with a traditional Japanese watercolor or photograph. Some in contrast, others not. To the Haiku purist the following might not be proper in the strict sense. Your latitude is appreciated. Mortgage Haiku #2 Why 17? It is the total number of syllables in a Haiku, no other reason.Why separate them? Each one should be read and engaged individually. The market seems to be comfortable, in the short-term, with rates where they are: the 10-yr around 3.80% and conforming conventional 30-yr ranging from 5.75-6.25, depending on if the borrower wants to pay or receive a rebate. (Mortgages are worse by about .125 this morning.) The only news out today – Existing Home Sales – is not expected to move rates, but there is quite a bit of news coming out later this week. Tomorrow we will see the Labor Department's Producer Price Index (PPI) for January. It measures inflationary pressures at the producer level of the economy, one of the reasons why rates are as high as they are: fears of inflation. In our local area, prices have been depressed for a while.  California and Florida are the top two states for foreclosures and short sales, REO's etc.  This had caused a pretty negative effect on our markets.  But actually in the early 2000's boom years, most of our areas were up about 35% in value appreciation.  So, it's all relative isn't it?  If we are now down about 15% to 20%, we are still ahead.  And, if you subscribe to the real estate concept of buying and holding until the time is right to sell, well you might want to think about the following too.Is there a reason to sell in a down market rather than wait for that 15% to 20% in price appreciation to regain in your area?  You might think I am crazy, but just look at this analysis...
