As most of us in California know, we need to vote NO on Prop 8 this election. I created a website for the Rainbow Community Center and have been maintaining it for the past year or so as a donation.  The center has youth drop in, free HIV testing, groups, food for seniors, and so much more. So in an effort to get more support for the center, I am going to start blogging in localism about some of their invents.  This one in particular sounds like fun. No On Prop 8 Fundraiser Drag Show Starring:Holotta Tymes, Stephanie St. James, Diva Dan, Cassandra Cass, Leona and other special guests. Where:  Club 1220, 1220 Pine Street in Walnut Creek, CA When: Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 9pm $5 Cover at the door, raffles and auctions. 21 and over please.

When I select a qualified intermediary to handle my 1031 tax deferred exchange, what safeguards can I take to insure that my money will be safe in their hands? The answer to this question is an important one since your investment property equity can be a substantial part of your overall wealth. Most qualified intermediaries are reputable, honest and ethical, but like all businesses it only takes one or two making newspaper headlines to cast doubt on an entire industry. Some of the questions that you ask a qualified intermediary before you make your choice should include the following: 1. Will my money be placed in a segregated account rather than a pooled account with other exchanger's money? You want your funds placed in a separate account which is FDIC insured up to the legal limit pe...

An article posted in the money section of MSN.com titled, “Could Your Bank be the Next to Fail?” caught my eye this week. The article summarized the recent seizure of IndyMac Bank by the FDIC and offered ways to protect yourself. The author also noted it was difficult for the average consumer to do research on which banks may be in trouble. That is certainly true, but only because most consumers don’t know where to look. The FDIC’s website is one of the best resources for this research. It’s surprisingly easy to navigate, and offers explanations of most of the terms and data shown. One of the best data points to examine is the “Tier One Capital ratio.” Tier One Capital is the ratio used by regulators as an overall indicator of the financial well-being and stability of a bank. The higher...

The West Coast Green 2008 conference in San Jose this week was full of exhibits, speakers and wonderful ways to make a difference in the future green efforts for our planet earth. As you know, Carbon dioxide is generated as a by-product of the combustion of fossil fuels or the burning of vegetable matter, among other chemical processes.  Wikipedia says - Carbon Dioxide In the recent past, transfer rates due to photosynthesis and respiration and including decay, were just about even. However, more carbon dioxide is being deposited in the Earth's atmosphere, than is being removed. In 1850, atmospheric carbon dioxide was about 280 parts per million (ppm), and today it is about 350 ppm. This increase is believed to be due to the burning of wood and fossil fuels and the destruction of forest...

One of the most challenging situations we face is trying to convince our aging loved ones that they can no longer live in their homes alone.  I have personally been through this with both my parents and my Mother-in-Law.  It's hard for them to recognize their own limitations.  Their strong minds believe they are doing just fine...but their fragile and aging bodies just aren't keeping up!  Their home becomes a prison and they are held captive because it is not functional to their aging needs.  Well...thank goodness for Assisted Living where they can get the assistance and care they need to live a fulfilling, engaging and social life.  Getting them there is the tough part...watching them engage, adapt and perk up is the reward! If you are...or have been faced with this challenging situati...

The gap is widening between home staging and interior design.  The interior designer has their place in personalizing and creating the homeowner's vision for their everyday living experience.  The decorator discovers your personality and brings your unique wants and needs to your space.  Your home becomes the essence of your lifestyle, choices and personality. Fast forward to selling.  The professional home stager removes the YOU and gives space and function to the home with less personalized décor, allowing the buyer's feelings to emerge as to how they would utilize your home as their home, should they purchase it. They FEEL at home as it reflects them and their lifestyle. They SEE the home as it would suit their family needs and situation.  If a home feels like YOUR home or grandma's ...
