Have you ever lied? (You're lying right now if you said, "No.") Have you ever been lied to? (Some of you are thinking, "Every time I listen to the Evening News"?) The fact is lying is as old as our first parents (Adam and Eve if you forgot). And maybe if they had the following list they may not have fallen for the Serpent's whopper (and we wouldn't be in such a mess)... 7 Clues That Somebody's Lying: (what might you add?) 1. He tends away from eye contact 2. He tries to change the subject 3. He's unusually adamant about innocence 4. He has a mannerism that gives him away 5. His story just doesn't jive (keeps changing) 6. He places the blame on others 7. You just have a feeling about him (women's intuition if you're a gal) You might also be interested in: 13 Steps To Unhappiness (to be ...

I have a confession to make. My friend had a heart attack the other night. And please read to the end of this post before you get mad or yell at me (or quit subscribing to this blog), but I put off taking him to the hospital until today (2 days later). Ouch. I know, I know. I should have taken him immediately. I know, I know. It was really selfish of me to think of my convenience only and not of his situation (dire as it was). But I needed to get a good night's sleep after all. I had to go to work the next day (after the heart attack). And the doctor wouldn't be available for 36 hours any way. (I called.) What was I to do? And so my friend had to wait. He had to! And there draped with a towel over him. (No kidding. I put one on. Now there's a picture.) And it really doesn't matter if h...

I attended the 140 Characters (Twitter) Conference in Twain Harte yesterday (Tuesday, May 24, 2011). I thought it might be beneficial to offer a short recap of the things I learned. And so I've put together just a few of the overall theme points I remember off the top of my head (from the speakers who spoke): 12 Twitter Conference Takeaways:  1. If you don't learn the new media, you will be left behind. 2. It takes TIME to make social media work. 3. No one is (quote) "reading" anymore. 4. Video is huge. 5. All politics is local global. 6. Don't rely on one media. (Diversify.) 7. It is important to ENGAGE your audience (versus broadcasting to / spamming them). 8. Sometimes we're too close to our business to see things as they really are. 9. QR (quick response) codes offer endless possib...

We're so quick to judge. (Aren't we?) Well, maybe you aren't, but more often than I care to admit, I know I am. (Full disclosure time.) I'm ready to convict, pass sentence on and pull the switch (on the electric chair) all in one fell swoop it seems at times ~ with that driver that's driving so slow (when I'm late for work) or neighbor that's playing music too loud (when I'm trying to take a nap) or grocery clerk that's making mistakes on the sale item (when the cost of food is high enough) or just about anybody else that doesn't live up to my expectations, way of doing things ("ideal"), etc. Oh, so you're a little like this, too, sometimes. Hmm? (Maybe just a little?) Of course, if I knew the driver, neighbor, grocery clerk just had a loved one pass away and that's why he was driving ...

This is a quick one. In and out. They're rules I live by as a full time real estate blogger (part of my job description) going into the sixth year. (Of course, there's much more under the surface of these icebergs.) So here you go with... 11 tips about blogging (plus 1 bonus): #1: I remember it’s the boss and company I'm representing. #2: I shut out distractions so I can think. #3: I let my writing “simmer” overnight. (To read "Blogging and Grandma's Sauce," click here.) #4: I write and write and write some more. #5: I read and read and read some more. #6: I press through writer’s block and brain freeze. "On June 4, 1783 at the market square of a French village of Annonay, not far from Paris, a smoky bonfire on a raised platform was fed by wet straw and old wool rages. Tethered above, straining its lines, was a huge taffeta bag 33 feet in diameter. In the presence of 'a respectable assembly and a great many other people,' and accompanied by great cheering, the balloon was cut from its moorings and set free to rise majestically into the noon sky. Six thousand feet into the air it went -- the first public ascent of a balloon, the first step in the history of human flight. It came to earth several miles away in a field, where it was promptly attacked by pitchfork-waving peasants and torn to pieces as an instrument of evil!" Of course, the above story is all about the subject of change. It...

What's valuable to you? What would you be upset over if you lost it? Anything coming to mind? Of course, what I'm talking about when I ask these questions is: Assets. They are much more than money and property (though that's a part of it). Assets include your health. (It's an asset to be healthy.) Assets include the people in your life (kids, friends, relatives, spouse). Assets include what you do for a living (your job). They include your abilities, your smile (that is an asset, too). There are just a whole lot of things that fit the category that we don't always think about as assets (but they are). It's a fact of life that dangers exist. Our assets are always at risk. Of course, you can't plan for everything, but you can plan for some things. It's with this in mind that I've come up...

Even those who "break the law" don't like it if somebody burglarizes their house. You ever think about that? The burglar himself being burglarized? Shouldn't he (or she) be happy for the person that stole their stuff? After all, they're in the same business, aren't they? And is it not evidence that burglary is wrong that the burglar himself gets upset when his stuff is stolen? (And calls the police?) Fill in the "burglary" blank with anything else: shading the truth, cheating on taxes, talking on a cell phone while driving, having an affair, etc. Why is it alright for you to do it to somebody else? ~ but rue (lament) the day they do it to you! Have you ever stuck your foot in your mouth? If you’re like me you do it almost daily (hourly?). I say things I wish I hadn’t of said. I say things that embarrass me (or another person). I say things and I wish could take it back. (Been there, have you?) And I don’t think there’s a booster shot to help with this recurring problem among many of us, so without that, what can a person do to steer clear of slurping on his stinky toes? I think the following "steps" are a good "foot" forward… 5 Steps to Help You Avoid Foot in Mouth Disease: (do you have any you would add?) 1: Determine to only build up, not tear down. 2: Think (and then think some more) before you open your big, fat trap. 3: Allow emotions to cool before speaking. (Walk around the block first. And maybe a 2nd time?) 4: Count...

I have a confession to make. I woke up at 2 a.m. (Pacific Daylight Time, USA) today and watched the Royal Wedding. (Vows were exchanged about an hour later.) No, I didn't set my alarm clock to ring. And no, I didn't plan it. I just happened to not be able to sleep (no lie), turned on my wife's computer and there it was live streaming ~ Prince Charles and Camilla (Parker Bowles) entering Westminster Abbey. After that came Queen Elizabeth in an all yellow dress. (Quite striking.) And then not too much later came Kate Middleton, the bride to be. It was really quite fascinating to watch, actually. The pomp. The circumstance. I enjoyed it. (Though I'm paying for it now sitting here typing this about 12 hours later.) And I guess as an off-the-cuff response to taking in this event like I did ...
