San Diego Celebrates the 4th with the Big Bay Boom! July 4th Celebration in San Diego wouldn't be the same without the yuuuuge fireworks display that rivals the best anywhere in the US. 4 Simultaneous displays at different points on the San Diego Bay and it is all orchestrated to synchronized music by the San Diego Pops.Last year instead of my usual place on top of the Hilton towers parking lot, I opted for the steps at the top of the San Diego Convention Center and was able to see and hear the full orchestration of the synchronized music of the Pops.It was powerful and a wonderful way to experience our 4th Celebration.This years fireworks celebration starts at 9:00 PM on the San Diego Bay and your truly will be there, hope you are too!   07/04/2016

San Diego Museum of Art Quilt Exhibit We spend a couple of hours this past Monday at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. Enjoying museums and art galleries is one of our favorite things to do, and this was no exception, plus we had not been there before.  The quilt exhibit from 2 collectors, almost 50 in all, was most impressive. These are ALL hand done, which is pretty incredible when you see up close how many tens of thousands of stitches there are, and thousands of small pieces of fabric. These quilts were all made between 1860 or so and the early 1900s. Truly works of art!  06/24/2016

How to Spend 30 Hours as a Tourist in San DiegoA Photo Journey I wrote yesterday, on Father’s Day, that we were taking off for about 30 hours to be tourists in America’s Finest City. It wasn’t clear how the time would unfold since we were just going to go where our moods took us.   30 hours later we’re back after having a wonderful time and seeing some sights in San Diego. We did little planning except to make the hotel reservation for last night in the Gaslamp District in San Diego, and to set up a dinner reservations at Osteria Panevino, a few blocks from the hotel.   While planning was not needed for most of the trip – even lunch at Chez Loma (photos below) on Coronado Island was spontaneous – it makes sense to have a hotel in place. We're taking off for a Staycation here in America's Finest City It's Father's Day, but we decided also, rather last minute, to just take the next 24 hours or so and see how things unfold. Sometimes it's nice to not have everything all planned out and just see where the inspiration takes us. And to play tourist in the city where you live. Who knows what we will discover that was previously unknown.
